Amazon Echo Buds Review: Best Alternative To Airpods
The Amazon Echo Buds are the company’s first attempt at developing a genuine wireless headset with Alexa built-in, and while they’re far from ideal, they have a lot going for them – especially with Prime Day 2021 sales underway. While you might anticipate Alexa to be the highlight, the Echo Buds are distinguished by Bose’s active noise reduction (ANR) technology. The Echo Buds’ ANR offers a pleasant break for commuters who want more than simply passive noise isolation to shut out the outside world, and can’t normally be obtained at the price range.PriceThe Echo Buds are only $129, which is an amazingly enticing and affordable price point given the smart features packed in here, such as hands-free Alexa and active noise reduction. ...
... esignFor better or worse, the Amazon Echo Buds have a rather basic design; in fact, if it weren’t for the Amazon “smile” on the casing, you wouldn’t be able to determine who makes the headphones. The buds themselves are unbranded and appear to be identical to the hundreds of other generic true wireless earbuds on the market… which can be a good thing if you don’t want the world to know you’re using them. The earphones are constructed of plastic and come in two different shades of black: matte and gloss. Each bud has a touch-sensitive button that can be reprogrammed via the Amazon Alexa app to do different things (more on that in a second).Touch controls are amazing, however the default commands are absolutely irrational for whatever reason. You won’t be able to control anything you want because the headphones only recognise double taps and long pushes. Controlling music playback, activating your phone’s assistant, toggling ANR, and toggling pass-through are all options. Every other single-button true wireless headset allows you to control more features with single, double, triple, and long pushes. You won’t be able to control anything you want because the headphones only recognize double taps and long pushes. Every other single-button true wireless headset allows you to control more features with single, double, triple, and long pushes.Alexa integrationAlexa integration is excellent, given that the Echo Buds are an Amazon product. You don’t have to touch any buttons to access Alexa because the headphones are always listening for the command. The best part is that you don’t even have to utilize Alexa because the Alexa app lets you select the assistant you want to activate with a single touch. What’s the bad news? As a result, Alexa is the only assistant that can be launched using a ‘hot word’ rather than a long press.PerformanceLet’s discuss the main feature of Echo Bud: Active Noise Reduction (ANR). ANR is not as successful as active noise cancellation (ANC) at creating a sensation of silence, but it does a wonderful job of reducing noise from the outside world. (In fact, we found the Echo Bud’s ANR to be more effective than the ANC in some other true wireless headphones.)The Echo Buds already do a decent job of noise isolation by forming a solid seal, but with ANR turned on, voices and a train’s low drum fade into the distance. The Echo Buds’ microphones are good at picking up spoken instructions, but in busy places, you’ll have to raise your voice. Calls sound fine, with callers reporting that they could hear clearly but that the audio quality was similar to that of a speakerphone.Battery life, case, and chargingThe Echo Buds have a battery life of roughly five hours of continuous playback and three full recharges from the case, for a total of about 20 hours of battery life. The earbuds can be charged for around two hours with a 15-minute trip in this case.Magnets and pin connectors hold the earphones in place in the casing. The casing is built of the same matt black plastic as Amazon’s Fire tablets. Despite its durability, it has a cheap feel to it. On one side, there’s a MicroUSB charging connector, and on the bottom, there’s a pairing button. Given that most smartphones now charge via USB-C, it would have been preferable to use that port.In comparison to the greatest true wireless earbuds produced in the last year, the case is fairly large and heavy, measuring around twice the size of the AirPods Pro or Jabra Elite 75t cases. It’s still pocketable, but it’s not as practical or portable as smaller options. It would only fit inside the huge money pocket of one pair of jeans.Call qualityThe Echo Buds are just decent at picking up your speech, but they do a fantastic job of blocking out extraneous noises. I walked past a bustling construction site during my test. My caller could hear the occasional bang or boom, but the machinery’s persistent drone was nearly completely obscured. The Echo Buds outperform most truly wireless earbuds in this area, so if you’re looking for a set of buds that can handle loud surroundings, the Echo Buds are a better option than most.In comparison to the greatest true wireless earbuds produced in the last year, the case is fairly large and heavy, measuring around twice the size of the AirPods Pro or Jabra Elite 75t cases. However, its clumsy controls and lackluster quality keep it from outperforming competing genuinely wireless buds.Meta descriptionAmazon’s new Echo Buds 2 are the company’s second attempt at true-wireless earbuds.
