Handwriting is one of the important skills for a child to have. Before checking what’s written it’s more important for the reader to impress with how it’s written. It has been observed by the mentors and the parents of the kid that it is hard to identify what their child is writing. India is a country where good hand-writing is considered as a sign of success, neatness, and as a reflection of a person’s personality.

A person with bad handwriting is considered a lazy, lethargic, and unorganized person, and when we see beautiful calligraphy handwriting we already make up the image of the person having that hand-writing is confident, suave, and active. If your kid has good handwriting his/ her confidence will be sky high while writing for examinations as they know when they are writing correctly and neatly as compared to the kids who are writing but gibberish, the one with the neat one’s will always have the edge in terms of markings.

Mahatma Gandhi wrote more than 500 letters to students and in most of the commands, he has mentioned that he regretted having poor handwriting as compared to his peers ...
... in London while he was studying. A person with good handwriting back then was considered for engaging the brain and body and helping students to do critical thinking and enhancing creativity and imagination power.

Here are a few reasons why good handwriting is important for your kid

• Builds Self Confidence

• Engages Creative Thinking in a kid

• Leads them to Success

• Engages Body & Brain

• Creates better readers & listeners

• Helps a kid to focus more on the topic

To help your kid have calligraphic and beautiful artistic handwriting there are some steps that you can follow at home and improve your kid’s handwriting that are :

• Focus on Grip

It’s really important for the kid to focus on the grip. Make sure that the child is gripping the pen or pencil correctly. The actual focus of the pen/pencil should be resting on the thumb and should be held in place by the index and middle finger. The grip should not be either too hard or too firm as it may worsen the handwriting and make hands worse and the kid cannot write for longer which will impact the consistency.

• Use Coloring and Maze Books

Let your kid play with colors and maze books, ask them to draw between the points and color their books. Using different stationery like pens, pencils or markers will help your kid to understand the grip of different objects and will also help with fine motor skills. To encourage your child, sit with them for the coloring sessions. You will be spending quality time with them and unknowingly they are improving without knowing it.

• Keep the Paper in the Right Angle

We cannot write on a paper head-on and we usually slightly tilt it and we need to explain the science to the child as well that– They need to slightly tilt towards the right hand side if they are right-handed at an angle of 45 degrees and if they are left-handed they need to tilt towards the left at 45 degrees. The 45 degrees angle scientifically helps a kid to form the letters easily.

• Right Postures helps them Write Better

You must have experienced when your kid is sprawled out on the floor the handwriting is much different than that while they are writing on a study table. In Order to have the best of handwriting make sure that they are– Sitting straight on the chair with their back all the way back of the chair– Their feet should be touching the floor and the knees are bent at 90 degrees angle

• Practice with Patience

As a parent, while teaching your kids make sure that you are spending enough time with them to learn and do not lose your cool. Remember, all the tactics that you are teaching them are new to it and if you lose your temper you might be discouraging them and giving them hard time to learn and difficult to talk to you about the challenges. They’ll take their time to learn just be supportive and stand by them.

• If needed talk to the Doctor

Last but foremost important is that do not hesitate to talk to a pediatrician if your child is facing challenges with fine motor skills as they might need to spend some time with the physical therapist to catch up with their friends. It’s ok to open up with the doctor when the kid is small rather than regret when they grow up and can’t catch up with their mates.

Good Luck!
