Particularly popular in tropical and sub-tropical environments, the sago palm is a common houseplant. Unfortunately, it’s toxic to pets! Learn more here from your vets Lewisville, TX.

Symptoms of Sago Palm Toxicity
Sago palms contain a toxin called cycasin that is the root of the danger. It can cause liver failure if a pet doesn’t receive treatment. Symptoms of poisoning include loss of appetite, drooling, vomiting, and diarrhea. Later, a pet could suffer depression, lethargy, seizures, and jaundice.

Treatment for Sago Palm Toxicity
Take your pet to the veterinary emergency room if you notice the symptoms described above. (Bring along a piece of the plant if you know that’s what your pet ingested.) Your vet might induce vomiting, and activated charcoal might be given to stop the toxin’s absorption in the gut. If liver failure has set in, IV fluid therapy, anti-vomiting drugs, and even blood transfusions could be needed.

Preventing Sago Palm Toxicity
Clearly, preventing sago palm toxicity is preferable to treating it. Keep this plant out of your home, garden, and landscaping. Ask your vet what other kinds of harmful plants are common in your area.

Schedule your pet’s next office visit at your vet clinic Lewisville, TX.
