Hunting all over the world – and certainly in the US in southern states such as Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, and Virginia among them – has become a very popular pastime for many hunters, their friends, families, and children. It has also become sophisticated in many respects and is no longer a quick outing somewhere in the hopes of finding a special trophy.
These days hunters are very aware of what responsible hunting is about, they are aware of the ethical principles that drive the industry and their hunting trips; they also understand that with an industry that has become very professional, there are great opportunities to hunt quality animals at sought-after destinations, often dependant on finding the best hunting lease.
Leases are advertised in the press and on the internet, they are recommended by other hunters, they are offered by knowledgeable landowners and/or their managers that make sure their property is promoted properly. Therefore, it is important to look around for the best lease for your hunting trip. Leases can make all the difference to the hunter’s experience, and finding a great lease ...
... that ensures quality buck and other animals is often the best starting point.
This happens when you deal with an owner or their representative that manages their land/habitat well so that the best animals are raised there – for the hunter to benefit from. Also, it is a good idea to understand the different leases and to consider which one(s) will best suit you.
A hunting lease is, essentially, an agreement between a hunter and landowner that gives the hunter an exclusive right, albeit a limited right – according to a specific agreement – to hunt on the owner’s land at an agreed-upon time. Hunters normally get permission to erect their blinds, tree stands, and feeders to assist them in taking down their prey, but they are not to alter the land or erect permanent structures on it or use the land for other purposes. To this end, an agreement in writing spells out the hunter’s responsibility, as well as that of the owner. Financial compensation normally forms part of these agreements.
Some examples of hunting leases in the South would refer to the following, for example:
An annual/yearly lease – this type of lease allows the hunter to visit the land throughout the year, during all open seasons, and to hunt whatever prey is allowed to be hunted during whatever periods are stipulated. Therefore you may be able to hunt deer during a specific season, and birds when it is time for wing-shooting, for example;
The seasonal lease – this lease, as the term suggests, refers to a specific season, and the prey to be offered should only be whatever is offered during the season you book the lease for. These leases often depend solely on the needs of the owner who may, at certain times, not want any visitors either because he/she wants their own hunting time, or because management responsibilities may demand the habitat be spared visitors, for example;
Leases on a short-term basis – these are offered on a daily, or a weekly, or monthly basis (or whatever period suits the owner best) and are suitable for the hunter that may be looking for a one-off, or a very short trip.
The above are examples of popular leases and are offered, normally, because it suits the landowner to do so. Of course, hunters are free to look around elsewhere if these leases limit their hunting opportunities.
Because there are some really good tracts of land available for hunters, it goes without saying that good land with great animals are the ones that the public will always want to visit: this also means that owners that go out of their way to raise quality animals are the ones whose leases will attract attention and will be more popular than many others. Great leases are often those that are well managed and administered professionally – also by specific management services. Hunters, and landowners, know this.
