Sidewalks are constructed using concrete which makes them durable. Even though they are very sturdy, there are a few factors such as the ground movement, change in temperature, and poor water drainage that can speed up their deteriorating period. Maintaining a sidewalk is necessary and is a responsibility of every citizen as they are potential trip hazards.

A broken, cracked, or even a sloped sidewalk can lead to a DOT violation and a lawsuit in the worst-case scenario. Hiring an experienced sidewalk repair contractor is essential as the repair is a complex task. Still, the contractor also needs to have proper and updated knowledge of the repair criteria and the process to get your work done smoothly. This is why in most cases, you are required to hire a skilled sidewalk repair contractor to get rid of a DOT violation.

How does a sidewalk repair contractor remove a DOT violation?

Well, first, the DOT sidewalk violation removal NYC will evaluate the damaged sidewalk. Then they will make a decision based on their evaluation; whether to repair the sidewalk or replace it. They will manage to do the entire ...
... repair or replacement process in a cost-effective range.

A good contractor will be aware of all the necessary permits they need to have before starting the construction work. The sidewalk construction permit is requested by calling 311.

Once you have acquired all the permits, then your contractor would work similarly to the following three scenarios:

A full replacement

If the sidewalk condition is so poor that it needs to have a whole replacement, then at first, the DOT sidewalk violation removal NYC will break the damaged portion of the sidewalk with the help of a masonry drill. Next, he will clear away the concrete leftover pieces and wipe away any dust to level the ground well. After this, he will pour concrete into the leveled ground using a template that holds the shape of the slab. When the wet concrete has been poured, it is balanced using a trowel. Finally, when the concrete has dried up, the template is removed, and the sidewalk has now been completely replaced.

Small repairs

If the sidewalk is chipped, broken, uneven, or cracked, then a method called “Mud Jacking,” “Slab Jacking,” or in simpler terms, concrete rising is done.
As the name suggests, this method uses a rising technique to fix the slight repairs. The contractor drills a pattern of holes in an uneven slab. After which, some concrete is poured into the holes. This causes the voids under the slab to fill up and rise the concrete slab. Lastly, visible holes are secured with concrete, and the sidewalk is now free of any minor damages.

Trees and Tree Roots

A well-experienced contractor would know that if trees or their roots have caused the sidewalk damage, they cannot take any action. They are prohibited from cutting the tree, and if they do so, it will just turn out to be a mess and cost you much more than what you had in your mind for a simple sidewalk repair!

So instead, either you or your contractor can contact the Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) and let them take over. You will not be allowed to pay any bill charges for any damage caused by the tree or its roots. It will be on the DPR, and you will have a repaired sidewalk and, in addition, end up saving your money!

Requesting a dismissal

Once your sidewalk is restored, your contractor will need to get a dismissal approval for the DOT. Your contractor is required to call 311 and request a sidewalk violation dismissal. Then they are acquired to file the documents asking for clearance. After the papers have been filed, a re-inspection by a sidewalk inspector will occur to make sure your newly repaired or replaced sidewalk meets the sidewalk repair criteria. After this final inspection, if the sidewalk inspector is satisfied, the DOT will remove the violations.
