The Importance Of Wind Speed Anemometers
Wind speed anemometers measure the speed of the wind. If you think about meteorologists, they talk about wind speed when giving a weather forecast, especially during periods of potentially dangerous conditions. As you will discover, this type of handheld device is beneficial for virtually anyone.
Anemometer Working Principle
The name of this wind direction instrument derives from the word “anemos,” which in Greek translates to “wind.” Although there are several different types, they all work off the same principle of measuring an analog signal produced by the wind. That signal is then compared to standard values of wind velocity already calibrated. As a result, the anemometer measures an unknown wind speed, creating a readout that shows the speed’s value or number.
For a long time, meteorological departments were the only ones using an anemometer, but thanks to advanced technology and greater ...
... demand, it is now something that anyone can use. For example, pilots, boaters, runners, high-rise construction workers, and many others rely on handheld anemometers. By measuring the wind, people can enjoy recreational activities and perform work in optimal conditions or make appropriate changes based on the instrument readout.
A perfect example of why a handheld anemometer is so important is a boat Captain taking a group out for whale watching in the ocean. At first, everything is fine, but within hours and now a good distance from shore, the wind kicks up. The captain wants to make sure that everyone onboard is safe, so using his anemometer, he takes measurements of the wind. Seeing a notable increase, he recognizes the potential danger of waves becoming too large for the boat to handle, thereby making the decision to head back to shore.
Types of Anemometer
Following are the most common types of anemometers currently available.
Acoustic
Cup
Differential Pressure
Doppler
Hot-Wire
Laser
Mechanical
Pitot Tube Static
Ping Pong
Plate
Sonic
Tube
Ultrasonic
Vane
For a mechanical anemometer, a built-in spinning fan generates magnetic pulses. Those pulses are measured and then displayed digitally on the Beaumont Scale. An ultrasonic anemometer measures wind speed using high-frequency sound, which is usually higher than what humans can hear. As for the laser anemometer, rather than measure wind with ultrasound, it uses a beam of light.
Due to their importance and broad reach, handheld anemometers like the Comptus A75-101 and A75-104 are in high demand. At Comptus, we take pride in offering our customers the most innovative handheld weather devices on the market.
