So, what is upskilling? It means just to learn new skills. It can be as simple as painting to as complex as stock trading. But for a country as developed as Singapore, upskilling is not just about learning new skills, but those which are relevant to the industry they are in. The Finance Minister of Singapore in 2015 has also stressed upon the topic of upskilling as it was important for the development of Singapore’s economy.

A survey conducted by UOB suggested that 9 in 10 of the employees in Singapore would be needing upskilling to say competitive in post-pandemic world. 88% of Singapore employees who participated in the survey believed that it would be difficult to secure new roles in this recession and organizations prefer those who can perform multiple roles. 87% of respondents believe that instead of hiring the employers would digitalise to cut cost for the company. The study also showed that 98% employees belonging to age segment of 56 to 65 require upskilling to stay competitive in the industry which is around 90% for employees between 24 to 55. The pandemic caused by COVID-19 showed the importance of versatility ...
... and continual learning for the employees so that they can become ready to take on changing job demands. With digitalisation trend accelerating, it is essential for the employees to develop skills which would ensure their sustenance in future work which will be dominated by new digital technologies.

But why don’t more Singaporean employees upskill? The prime reason could be the opportunity cost of leaving out on work to spare time for the classes. With such a work culture where the employees are over worked, it is difficult for them to sacrifice their time on classes. For some opportunity cost can also be monetary. But in the pandemic with shrinking economy and increasing unemployment, it is important to upskill with the in-demand skills in the job market.
