About Hearing Protection For Hunters And Shooters
As we age, we may find that our natural ability to hear properly is no longer great, but there may be help in the form of certain surgeries or devices to be worn to alleviate the worst effect of the years. But, many younger people are also at risk of losing their hearing or having it interfered with by outside factors such as ongoing, or sudden, or regular noise.
Sound is great, but loud noise not – as it may indeed lead to hearing problems either at an early stage because of regular exposure to high noise levels, or later in life because of constant abuse of the ears and one’s ability to hear well over time. In most developed societies, those that buy and sell guns and rifles, those that produce on a large scale in factories and other industries, noise is becoming a real issue for many and is often the cause for NIHL (Noise-Induced Hearing Loss) to develop.
Sound is measured in a unit referred to as decibel (dB). When sound is so loud that it causes discomfort or hearing loss and impairment, it means that the decibels are too high, and unacceptable. The human ear is designed to handle certain levels of dB, ...
... but not levels that are too high. It is generally accepted by audiologists and other professionals that 90 dB is acceptable and that anything above it may cause damage to the individual’s hearing.
The following should shed some light: normal conversation takes place at around 60 dB, when you are traveling on the subway you are exposed to approx. 90 dB, and when you are exposed to sound levels higher than that, you may expose your ears to unacceptable levels of dB. For example, gunshots are estimated at 120 to 150 dB, and a jet take-off at around 140 if you are in close proximity to where the sound originates. These can lead to serious hearing problems. Many people believe it is dangerous only when you are exposed to these high sound levels all the time or regularly, which is not true. Even one loud burst over 120 may cause serious damage to your ability to hear.
Because of a much greater awareness of these issues than in the past, many more people now look at ways to help them protect their hearing when they are exposed to the real dangers when they listen to very loud music all the time, or when they work in noisy environments, or when they receive instruction at the shooting range when they take part in shooting competitions when they hunt.
They also understand that not only regular exposure may lead to these problems – even only a few times of having to contend with loud noise may cause deafness or partial deafness. That is why so many are looking at ways to protect their hearing. They buy disposable plugs each time they go to the shooting range or when they venture out hunting.
Some prefer to buy a better device such as earmuffs, and others, still, are looking at digitally-enabled electronic devices that are superior to previous generation products and devices. The latest ones are made as a customized product to suit the profile of a specific ear, and the user is able to adjust certain settings, for example, so that the individual wearing them is able to benefit from the features of, say, auto-environmental settings and channels that eliminate high dB (which is harmful to the ear) but allow normal sound (such as hearing buck move in the bush or listening to the voice of a shooting instructor).
This new generation of devices comes with superior features; devices are made to order, thereby making sure the user/customer is offered a device made for them and their profile specifically. These devices are starting to become very popular in countries where shooting and hunting are favored activities such as, for example, the UK, the US, and Canada.
More and more shooters and hunters are starting to appreciate the value of these advanced devices everywhere, and more and more retailers are offering them as an alternative to those that want to protect their hearing.
