Plastic Manufacturers In Favor Of Accelerating Infrastructure For Recycling
AIPMA (All India Plastic Manufacturers Association) has always been at the forefront of any clarion call for evolution in the industry. Be it organizing the foremost plastic exhibition in the name of Plastivision India or advocating for issues plaguing the sector, AIPMA has always been at the forefront. In recent times, there has been talk of a single-use plastic ban by the Central Government. Manufactures of plastics in the State of Telangana have opined that it will be tough to impose such a move since demand is extremely high for the items in question. They have instead requested the Government to emphasize more on boosting regulations for plastic recycling and accelerating the infrastructure for safeguarding the environment.
There are lakhs of employment opportunities dependent upon and generated by this industry. Based upon data provided by the Telangana Government alone, there are close to 3,000 plastic manufacturing facilities in the entire State, employing a whopping 2.5-3 lakh individuals. Yet, AIPMA and leading players in the industry feel that the ...
... figures may be higher in reality. The Vice-President (South) for All India Plastic Manufacturers Association or AIPMA, Anil Reddy Vennam, has stated that the Government usually takes organized players into account although there may be almost 25,000 unorganized entities operating in Telangana. He added that while bigger players are more concentrated in zones such as Jeedimetla, Kattedan and Balanagar, there are micro and small scale facilities located throughout the State.
He also added that 80-90% of the industry is in the category of small scale industries and they are the ones producing single use plastics owing to huge demand from kirana stores, eateries and food delivery service companies. AIPMA is instead advocating for accelerating infrastructure for suitable recycling of plastic while also making this concept a pivotal part of the school curriculum. Some of the big plastic consumers like food delivery services aggregator Swiggy, are working on coming out with more sustainable solutions for packaging. AIPMA has reiterated its demand for ramping up recycling infrastructure in Telangana while being committed towards working with the Government for achieving this objective seamlessly.
