The sago palm is a common houseplant that’s particularly popular in tropical and subtropical environments. You might have one in your home right now! Unfortunately, these plants contain a toxin called cycasin. Here, your pet clinic Davie, FL tells you more.

What are the symptoms?
Cycasin can cause liver failure in pets. Initial symptoms include appetite loss, drooling, vomiting, and diarrhea. Without treatment, a pet might experience depression, lethargy, seizures, and jaundice.

How is it treated?
Rush your pet to the veterinary emergency room if you see the above symptoms. And if you know that your pet ate part of a sago palm, bring a bit of the plant along with you to aid in diagnosis.

Treatment may involve induced vomiting, and activated charcoal may be given to slow the toxin’s absorption. If liver failure is present, fluid therapy, anti-vomiting drugs, and even blood transfusions may be needed.

How can I prevent sago palm poisoning?
Keep the sago palm out of your home and landscaping if you have a pet who likes to nibble on plants. That way, you know for sure that your ...
... home environment is safe.
