Automated Material Handling (amh) Market - Growth, Trends, Covid-19 Impact, And Forecasts (2021 - 20
An increase in infrastructure investment by the government and investments from industries, along with the 'Make in India' initiative, is expected to drive AMH systems' demand. The government of India aims to increase the manufacturing sector's share to the gross domestic product (GDP) to 25% by 2022, from 17% in 2018. Thus, manufacturers are likely to incorporate Industry 4.0 and other digital technologies to achieve this target. In India, the product consumption pattern is changing at a significant rate. The increasing middle-class population is likely to drive the need and demand for sortation systems to cater to the rising demand across the retail sector.
- The Indian market is expected to be one of the world's largest aviation markets by 2026, enabling India's airports to be future-ready. Additionally, According to Civil Aviation Minister, India plans to construct 100 new airports with an investment of USD 60 billion in the next 10-15 years to make air travel more affordable. These factors boost the demand for AMH equipment in the country. The automotive end-user industry in the country, which handles a high volume ...
... of materials and has a high throughput ratio, is expected to opt for AMH systems. According to the Airport Authority of India, passenger traffic is expected to increase to 322 million in 2018-19 with considerable investments in airport infrastructure. - In December 2019, BYD India, a subsidiary of the BYD Group, announced that it has expanded into the material handling equipment business in the country, making it only an Indian company to offer MHE products with lithium-ion phosphate battery in the country. The company's primary focus is on 3PL (third party logistics), warehousing, and logistics companies. According to the Head of BYD India MHE business, "The Indian warehousing and logistics sector is anticipated to attract nearly USD 10 billion investment over the next few years, and the technological advancement and process optimization of the warehousing industry is the key driving force behind the growth of logistics sector." - In July 2019, Godrej Material Handling, a business of Godrej & Boyce Mfg. Co. Ltd. announced Godrej RenTRUST, their new equipment rental brand that will provide 360-degree solutions to customers encompassing workforce, machine, fuel, and maintenance. Currently, the Indian material handling industry struggles with a lack of skilled labor, standardization (palletization), regulations, and fragmented nature of business. However, along with GST, many other trends shift the industry from being fragmented and unorganized to consolidation towards more significant organized players. The inclination towards asset-light models has created a business opportunity for held FLT rental businesses in India, which would offer an end-to-end solution.
- The warehousing property segment is emerging as a significant investment opportunity for investors. However, the COVID-19 lockdown has led to a slowdown in the warehousing industry with both investment activity and occupier leasing being subdued in Q1 2020. The first quarter witnessed only one investment deal worth USD 54 million in the Indian warehousing sector. Economists across the globe have forecast India's GDP growth to slow down considerably in 2020 due to the COVID-19 lockdown, affecting businesses across the board and reducing their aggregate demand for warehouses. But the signs of the warehousing industry are not as grim as it appears, which would negatively affect the automated material handling market as most of the warehouses are equipped with them.
Key Market Trends
Automated Conveyor is Expected to Hold Significant Share
- Belt conveyor is mainly used to transport solid material in a powdered form or bulk. Its primary application lies in connecting assembly lines to the final inspection and packing lines. It is the most widely used among the different types of conveyors, due to its versatility and cost-effectiveness. Process industries, such as construction and mining, use these conveyors to transfer raw materials from one unit to another rapidly. The equipment is used increasingly in the manufacturing of durable goods, such as automobiles, electrical and electronics, transportation equipment, and other machinery.
- Roller conveyors are the second-fastest growing, as well as the second-largest segment among conveyors. These are majorly used in e-commerce for light material handling. They are specifically designed for the rapid loading and unloading of vehicles and other open bodies with materials, such as rigid bulk packages and roller conveyors, which are the most preferred choice of conveyors. An increasing interest in sustainability, coupled with a robust economy and cost containment, has led to the demand for roller conveyors. Significant investments in the e-commerce industry, along with the application from the ever-growing internet-enabled consumers, are impacting the growth of roller conveyors in India.
- In the mining sector, conveyor belts enable easy transport of minerals from mines. In June 2020, Coal India Ltd announced to invest INR 15,700 crores in conveyor belts that will replace road movement between mines and wagons, the company said. The first phase will upgrade infrastructure at 35 mines, each with a capacity of four million tonnes per annum (MTPA) or more at six subsidiaries of the company. This involved capital expenditure (Capex) of about INR 12,300 crores and a total capacity of 406 MTPA. Phase-2 includes 14 projects in which four subsidiaries will spend INR 3,400 crore for full size of 100.5 MTPA.

According to the IBEF, the Indian e-commerce market is expected to grow to USD 200 billion by 2026 from USD 38.5 billion as of 2017.
