Not all hunters share the same profile or look at their favorite pastimes in the same way. Some hunters prefer to hunt big game in Africa; others opt for deer hunting in Alabama or Georgia, or for wing-shooting in Mississippi and surrounding states.

To some hunters issues related to wildlife conservation matter whereas others are not all that interested – as long as they can hunt and leave with a quality animal or bird(s). There are also groups that fully support hunting and eating only the meat of locally hunted animals, the so-called locavores. These people often support those ideals that concentrate on the furthering of local industries and promoting what is specific to their region, be that certain flora or fauna.

A good example would be promoting the deer found in a region, or the wild turkey, for example. Therefore they would market their produce and products strongly among the local region so as to be sure they build a good following – not meaning they exclude visitors from enjoying what they offer. Of course, this refers to only a small segment of a state’s hunting fraternity since hunters tend to visit those regions and states – and indeed hunting lodges – that offer them the opportunities they are looking for. To this end, hunters and hunting club members are willing to travel far for the ideal hunting trip. A lot depends on one’s preferences, and the quality of hunting lodges, what they offer, what they charge, what assistance hunters and their parties can expect.

This means, therefore, one may travel out of state for the most attractive option. Hunting lodges may be similar in certain ways but they are never the same: some offer more in terms of animals for the hunt, some are known as excellent white-tail deer destinations, or perfect for the requirements of the wing-shooter; others again, maybe a better option for pronghorn or mule deer for example. It depends on the hunters’ expectations of what they want to hunt.

But, it goes further. No hunter would be happy to pay good money for sub-par prey, for bad or insufficient service, for little or no help with erecting stands or other positions for the hunt. In addition to these issues, it can be accepted that the lodge that offers good accommodations and great food has a much better chance at being supported than those that do not offer such services.

It is fact that all hunters and wing-shooters will do their homework before they book a place at a lodge: they will compare facilities, they will want to know detail about rates and prices, about additional entertainment and whether or not they can bring their children and pets, for example.

Fortunately, there are choices, and hunters and wing-shooters that are happy to pay will expect value for their dollars. The good lodges will always stand out as they are easily discerned from the lesser ones. They will indeed go out of their way to ensure that their visitors are offered superior services, the best deer or birds for the hunt. This they achieve by making sure they have proper management plans in place, and they make sure their visitors are aware of this, of the trouble they go to in order for them to offer good prey.
