Whenever you are considering the possibility of trying a new drug, there's always a moment of worry. It's usual to think the more powerful the drug, the greater the risk of adverse side effects. In reality, this fear is unreal. No drug is allowed on to the market by the FDA unless it has a proven safety record. It has to go through multiple clinical trials. The results must not only show the drug is effective, but the actual incidence of reported side effects has to be disclosed. Even more importantly, the grant of a license by the FDA does not end the testing of the drug. In fact, all you people out there in the real world become test subjects by taking the drug. There is a Post-Marketing Reporting Program with all doctors, clinics and hospitals required to report any unusual side effects to the FDA as they occur. If the reports give cause for concern, the FDA instructs the manufacturer to change the labeling to warn users of potential problems. If the side effects are serious, the drug is withdrawn. No matter what the cost to the manufacturer, the safety of patients is more important. So long as a drug remains on the market, ...
... you can be assured the majority of people can use it safely.

That said, sleeping pills are designed to send you to sleep. This is like administering an anaesthetic. It knocks you out. The older drugs used to leave people with symptoms not unlike a hangover the next morning. They would feel tired and listless, sometimes with a headache and occasionally feeling nauseous. In effect, they were trying to wake up while the pills were still active in the body. Modern drugs taken at the right dosage avoid this problem because they clear the blood stream quickly. You should wake, feeling refreshed and ready to go. But one feature of being sent to sleep is that, sometimes, you do not wake up when you should. A significant number of Americans suffer from heartburn. This is an unwanted release of stomach acid back into the esophagus. During natural sleep, the discomfort is usually enough to wake you and you can take something to neutralise the acid and avoid damage to the esophagus. If you do not wake up night after night, the damage to your esophagus can become more serious. If you know your are prone to heartburn, discuss this problem with your doctor before taking sleeping pills.

Being the leading drug in the modern generation, ambien has proved itself with an unbeatable safety record since its launch. Used as prescribed and over short periods of time, it helps people get back into the rhythm of sleep. Because of the slight risks of dependence, you should not take ambien for too long and should definitely not exceed the recommended dosage. If you have any history of problems with alcohol or other drugs, you should discuss alternatives to sleeping pills to treat the insomnia. This means learning relaxation techniques and, if it is available in your area, go through a program of cognitive behavioral therapy to relearn the habits of sleep. With proper care and guidance, there's no reason why you should not be able to solve your sleep problems, with or without the help of medication.
