Iocl’s Biogas Plant Proposal Gets A Nod From Punjab Govt

Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) got a nod from the Punjab government to set up a compressed biogas plant at a site in Rakhra, Patiala. The site is an old closed cooperative sugar mill and the project will help reduce stubble burning. Stubble burning has always been a challenge for the Punjab government and by taking this decision December last year; the government has tried to curb it. The use of paddy straw for biogas production will not only help reduce pollution, but also improve soil fertility because of organic manure production.

The immense benefits of this CBG plant in Punjab also include direct and indirect employment generation. This massive biogas upgradation system with a production capacity of 30 tonnes of compressed biogas and it needs approximately 300 tonnes of paddy straw for daily feedstock. Organic manure production will be another added advantage of this CBG Plant in Punjab. It will produce about 75,000 tonnes of organic manure every year.

... and since biogas happens to be an environment friendly fuel, setting up this CBG plant will also help decrease dependence on fossil fuels whilst promoting circular economy. Companies offering biogas upgradation also believe that restoration of soil fertility and carbon content will help increase the savings of farmers too. IOCL plans to procure paddy straw from farmers through cooperative societies and it is indeed a welcome move.
