There is a wonderful travel destination in South India. It is the metro city and capital of Tamil Nadu state. It is called "Chennai". It has number of travel attractions including beaches, gardens, museums, caves, churches, wild life parks and amusement theme parks. All these things make Chennai as a perfect gateway of South India. The former name of Chennai is Madras. It was founded in the year of 1963 by the British East Indian company. St. Thomas, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ is said to have come to India as an evangelist and he died in Chennai. You can see two suburbs, Santhome and St.Thomas Mount are named in his memory.

Under the British government, the Chennai city grew to a major city in South India. They established new development. After independence it as pronounced as a capital of the Madras state. Then, the states were recognized on a linguistic basis. Chennai has become the capital city of "Tamil Nadu" as the major speaking language "Tamil". Gudiyam Caves:

It is located about 17 kms behind Poondi reservoir in Chennai. Only adventure travelers will do trekking. You need to walk on the tough terrain which is about 4 kms long. Travelers who love climbing on the mountains would enjoy visiting these caves.

Marina Beach:

It is the second longest beach in the world and it runs 12 km. It is one of the popular beaches. It is a nice sea shore for your morning and evening walk. The water will be highly salty and you will not be able to play swimming for a long time.

San Thom Cathedral:

This cathedral had constructed in remembrance of Apostle St. Thomas. It contains the beautiful statue of Virgin Mary. It was brought from Portugal in 1543.

Valluvar Kottam:

It is the memorial building of the poet sage Thiruvalluvar. It was built in the year of 1976. It is the historic monument.

Covelong beach:

It is 40 km away from Chennai. It offers wonderful peace and a great escape from the busy city life. They entertain fishing activities. It is the apt place to spend your weekend.

Art galleries:

It has a fine collection of paintings, handicrafts and bronze. All these collection is housed in a Mughal style building. They have a wide collection of paintings from 16th and 17th century and bronzes from 10th and 13th century.

Anna Zoological Park:

It is located on the outskirts of Chennai. It is created out of the reserve forest of Vandalur. This Zoo contains more than 170 species of mammals, birds and reptiles. You can roam around and visit the animals in the park via lion safari or you can take the elephant ride or battery operated vehicles would take you around the park.

Apart from the above, there is lot of amusement parks such as MGM dizzee world, VGP golden beach and pleasant picnic spots such as Pulicat. You should visit the sanctuaries of birds, called "Vedanthangal". It is one of the largest bird's sanctuaries in India. You can visit Crocodile bank whereas lot of Indian and African crocodiles and alligators are bred. We have Guindy National park, Guindy Snake Park, Government museum and Besant nagar beach.
