To be effective, search needs to understand exactly what kind of information is available and present it to users logically. The way they accomplish this is through four fundamental actions:
*Crawling 
*Indexing
*Retrieval 
*Ranking.
*Crawling: It is the process used by search engine to gather information of any websites. It helps us to discover the updated content on the web such as new sites or pages, changing in existing sites. Search Engine uses a program referred as "Crawler" which follow a proper process to determine which site to crawl and how.
*Indexing: Indexing is the collection and storing of data in organize information to facilitates fast and accurate responses to the queries. An Index helps user to quickly locate and access the data in a database table.
*Ranking: Ranking refers to a spot where a website or a URL takes on the result search page of a search engine.
Mechanism of Working: Firstly the Search Engine send the web crawlers to review the website contents. Maintaining a close attention to new websites and to existing website that has been recently changed, ...

Once the websites has been crawled and the data has been collected , the search engine needs to decide how to organized the collected data. Then through the Indexing process, the collected information is organized which help users to quickly and accurately access the data to the queries asked. So during the Indexing process, the search engine starts making decisions on where to display the specific content on the Search Engine Result Page.
