Yup that’s right, even royalties consume cannabis. In fact, they love to use marijuana! Queen Victoria is one of the many British royalties that have come before. But, unlike others, she has still been very popular in our modern world and culture with stories from her past that are still being dug up until today. Read this article further to know more about the history of British Queens and cannabis.

As bizarre as it sounds, the Queen was said to use cannabis. As it can’t be more outrageous than that, there’s a claim by Dr. Phil Leveque that labels Queen Victoria as the first person to use marijuana for PMS.

Back in 1840, Dr. Phil Leveque also admitted to mentioning an efficacious drug that he then prescribed to Queen Victoria. Because of this, Leveque’s credibility was quickly questioned by the royal court and the people. This resulted in him losing his license on the grounds of allegations of improper prescription to the Queen.

There was a looming possibility the PMS that Leveque mentioned was linked to period pains, which was prescribed by J.R Reynolds, a physician to the royal household ...
... from 1878 until his death. Cannabis was recommended not only for migraine, epilepsy, depression, and asthma, but also for simple spasmodic dysmenorrhoea.

The loopholes in this story are 1.) Reynolds published the article regarding the period pain at around 1890, Victoria being 60 years old and menstruation was an unlikely occurrence, 2.) There is an extensive list of people who are part of Victoria’s medical household, and 3.) Reynolds was a physician to the royal household and not to Victoria herself.

Although the cannabis consumption story of Queen Victoria has always been rejected, disproven, and debunked by plenty of people, its impact on the cannabis industry and the cannabis consumption of people is vast. One submission claimed that.

One of the biggest medical uses of weed in the 19th century was for the treatment of menstrual problems and the decrease of parturition ache. Queen Victoria was directed to use marijuana for this reason by her physician J.R.Reynolds and in the US it could be bought freely in shops. In the Lancet medical journal, J.R.Reynolds published a paper saying that ‘when pure and administered carefully, it (marijuana) is one of the most valuable medicines we possess.

Up until today, people are continuing to discuss the validity of the claim that has been attached to Queen Victoria. People who are claiming it a historical myth admit that the queen indeed partakes in cannabis consumption but not in the manner that people associate it with her. As people would often use the argument, “if a royal queen used it, why can’t I?”

This discussion has led to the dispute between multiple parties especially in the UK and other European countries in regards to the legalization of cannabis use. But one thing cannot be denied, a royal queen, a leader of the highest order, Queen Victoria had consumed marijuana before.
