Knitting Stitches
Knitting is an art whereby thread or yarn is turned into cloth through a method which comprises drawing loops through each other. The method may be done by hand or machine and there are various designs and methods to use. Different types of yarns and needles can be utilized to create various outcomes.
There are two types of knitting: weft knitting and warp knitting. Weft knitting is done manually or machines while warp knitting is done by machines only. Knitting can be done using a number of stitches. The basic knitting stitches are knit stitch, purl stitch, knit 2 together, yarn-over and stockinette stitch.
Knit stitch - this is done by intertwining loops with one another consecutively. One needle is used to pull a loop of yarn through a stitch on the next needle.
Purl stitch - the yarn is held to the front of your knitting and the right needle is pushed from back to front into the first stitch on the left needle. Use the right index finger to wrap the yarn around and down the right needle in a left-handed direction. Draw the right needle with the yarn through the old stitch backward and slip ...
... off the old stitch to create the purl stitch.
Knit 2 together - as the name implies, this is knitting two together. The right needle is pushed into the second stitch off the tip of the left needle ensuring that the first stitch is caught with it. Take the yarn over and up then downward. Catch the yarn then glide the old stitches off.
Yarn-over - after a knit stitch, take the yarn across the knitting from the back toward the front then knit the next stitch. The extra stitch that is created on the row is called a yarn-over.
Stockinette stitch - this is the most widespread knitting stitch which comprises knitting one row and purling the other. This is a straightforward method that is perfect for those who are novices.
