New Technology Procured For Detecting Chemicals In Fruits & Vegetables

 A Ph.D. student has devised a unique technique for detecting pesticide residue’s presence on the surface of fruits & vegetables. With the help of colleagues from different parts of the world, the student has created a base of silver nanoparticles on which he has developed flexible sensing films. For developing these sensors, the scientists from various universities like ITMO & National University of Singapore have come together & they have performed an experiment in which they had mixed melamine & minor quantity of silver nitrate in a Petri dish & they have topped it with a small layer of agar gel. ... of chemicals or pesticides is detected in the fruits & vegetables by performing the reaction of silver nitrate with other components, which result in precipitation of the white crystal. Now, when this white sediment is exposed to light, the decomposition of the crystals takes place, which results in the formation of silver nanoparticles. After completing this chemical reaction, the resulting product is dried & this whole process of drying results in the construction of lightweight & flexible films.These films help detect chemicals on the surface & the insides of the fruits & vegetables. In the testing process, a piece of the film is applied to the fruit & then alcohol is sprinkled on the fruit so that the pesticide molecules come together on the film’s surface. Then the resulting product is fitted inside a spectrometer. Then the oscillation of spectra on the graph indicates whether the body comprises the pesticide or not. This optical response is recorded, and then the verdict is rolled out of whether the fruit or vegetable contains chemicals.Method of TestingThis method is very cheap, faster & highly reliable. This method of testing the presence of chemicals on the fruits & vegetables is much more mobile as well, and due to the fact of portable & affordable devices, it becomes easier to check the response of the films on the fruits. The students at ITMO university plan to carry out subsequent experiments to identify other types of chemicals or pesticides on the surface of fruits & vegetables. The detection threshold of these sensors also helps in indicating the number of chemicals present in the fruits.fruits & vegetablesThe sinister effect that the pesticides give to the listener’s ears is a sign that no one likes them on their eatables. According to the US federal government, there are protocols & mechanisms designed for protecting people from harmful pesticide exposure. The upper limit of the residue levels shall not be crossed when spraying the food with chemicals & pesticides.
