Find The Right Treatment For Your Depression By Seeking Professional Help
Depression is a serious psychological illness that not only affects the people who suffer from it, but also their loved ones and other people close to them. There is also often a misconception about depression and it certainly does not mean that someone is simply feeling sad about something or disappointed in their lives. Depression is deeply rooted and more complicated than people realise and it can last for months or even years.
Although experts say that depression is mainly caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain, disappointments or trauma such as the death of a loved one, or other factors like financial debt and unemployment can also cause depression in humans. Therefore, it is extremely important to find the right support and treatment for depression. The risk is that depression if left untreated, can later turn into manic depression or bipolar mood disorder.
The World Health Organization estimates there are approximately 300 million people worldwide of all ages and from all walks of life who are suffering from depression. Depression is a mental disease that drains the sufferer's motivation and leaves ...
... him or her feeling powerless and defeated. These people find it difficult to reach out to others and on a deep emotional level, they may even say something that could be hurtful to others.
The exact causes of depression are not yet known, but as mentioned above, it has a lot to do with brain transmitters or chemicals in the brain. Once the action of this chemical is disturbed for whatever reason, depression can occur. Unfortunately, genes also play a big role and if a close relative of yours has been diagnosed with depression, chances are you will get it yourself.
Depression can be exacerbated by physical ailments such as Parkinson's disease and thyroid disorders and on a social level financial problems and divorce can increase one's susceptibility to becoming depressed.
With the right treatment by a qualified depression therapist, up to 80% of all depression sufferers are said to improve, and nearly 60% will fully recover. Ideally, the right treatment is a combination of therapy and medication and in severe cases where the person, for example, has considered or attempted suicide, they should be hospitalised.
Many depression sufferers also often make the mistake of stopping treatment too soon. Once treatment (therapy as well as medication) is suddenly stopped, depression can return and even become chronic. Speak to your depression therapist about your treatment plan and be sure to ask about combining treatment with medication, and how long you should use the prescribed medication.
Depression can dim any person's light, no matter who or what he or she is. When you have depression and you are not treated by a depression therapist, a psychologist or a psychiatrist, your illness will worsen. Do not ignore the consequences of untreated depression! The choice is yours - do you just want to exist, or do you really want to live a truly happy life?
Any person that suffers from depression should take the responsibility to find a professional as soon as possible, to help them manage their depression. The consequences can be devastating for people who do not receive counselling or therapy for their depression, such as personal suffering, job loss, broken marriages, health problems and in the worst case, death.
Often, people with depression see their primary care physicians for problems such as muscle aches, sleep problems, or fatigue, without knowing they are signs of depression. Sometimes these symptoms are accompanied by sadness and other times they do not, but if you suspect that you may suffer from depression or if any of your direct family members are diagnosed with depression, you should mention this to your doctor for a possible referral to a depression therapist.
It is no shame to have a mental health problem like depression, but sometimes shame prevents people from finding professional help. No-one can get over depression by themselves and finding the right treatment with a depression therapist could be the only thing withholding you from enjoying life to the full at present.
