What are Black and Grey tattoos?

Black and Grey tattoos are pretty famous nowadays in real life and in social media. They are especially regarded by people who want to portray themselves as very tough. Black and Grey tattoos were mostly made famous by 1970s Hollywood, where, in movies, usually the toughest inmates had them.

The history is also somewhat similar, Black and Grey tattoos are also called ‘jailhouse’ or ‘joint style’ tattoos because these were made famous by prison inmates. The prison inmates had to make the tattoo ink with cigarette ashes, pen ink, and stuff like that (so the color) as they did not have permission to real tattoos inside. In place of a tattoo machine, things like guitar strings and recording needles were used to draw.

Anyway, this was the history behind it. The Black and Grey tattoos got famous in the 70s and are going on successfully till now. The main idea is to use Black and different shades of Black to draw an engrossing and beautiful design.

Some styles that use Black and Grey tattoo designs:

Although black and grey tattoo style can be used in many ...
... forms and with many styles (you can even create your own style), but there are some famous styles which use this, they are:

1) Realism: Realism basically includes artwork that is ‘real’. Not like all flesh and bones of course, real as in portraits of human faces or animal faces, etc. Anything which is not imaginary comes under this category. Black and Grey tattoos work with this very smoothly as different shades and shadows of Black create a design which is similar to a photograph.

2) Old School: This is more famous by the name of ‘American style’. This was particularly made famous by sailors and military men. The popular designs include anchors, flowers, mermaids, gypsy women, bullets, skulls, etc. Basically, anything that would be fancy to men in solitude.

3) Japanese: Originally known as ‘irezumi’ the Japanese artists use Black and Grey tattoos as bases for other bright tattoos and also for individual artwork. The popular subjects are usually from Japanese anime and manga, geisha girls, dragons, flowers, and other mythological characters.

4) Chicano: The term was used as an offensive slur for Mexican Americans, but now it has gained cultural value among Mexican Americans. The Chicano style involves aesthetically cured designs surrounding catholic themes, Mexican music, rosary beads, the Virgin Mary, etc.

Conclusion

To conclude, a good Black and Grey tattoo artist will be experienced in generating a whiff of truthful shadows and shades from the original black. Sometimes the color white is also used to give grey tones to the tattoo.

It is not necessary that a Black and Grey tattoo must contain only black tones, you can talk to the tattoo artist regarding this and even listen to your tattoo artist’s suggestions.

Overall, the Black and Grey style of tattooing is probably here for a long time and will be here for a long time.
