We’ve all heard of Jeff Bezos who started global online service Amazon from his garage, and Bill Gates who dropped out of college to start Microsoft. While not always alone, such individuals became successful business owners not only through sheer creative ideas, but also through knowledge of the business world.

Thus, there is more to becoming a successful sole trader than just a unique idea. It takes a combination of smart entrepreneurial spirit, professional account management, and social skills in order to find success as a sole trader.

Smart entrepreneurial spirit

Although quite an obvious trait to have, there is no point in becoming a sole trader if you are not interested in running a business yourself, based on your own ideas and methods. When it comes to entrepreneurship, individuals need to be able to take calculated risks and possess the drive to keep going, even when things don’t work out right away.

Sole traders need to be prepared to invest a lot of their time and energy into their business, without guaranteed return - at least during the beginning stages. Don’t expect to make a ...
... heap load of money right away, because there is no way your business will take off without adequate preparation and the correct mindset.

Professional account management

In addition to being in the right mindset, professional account management will only bring positive results when you are starting your career as a sole trader. Whether you learn to manage your financial accounts and budget to a professional level yourself, or hire a qualified individual to do it, account management is an extremely valuable skill that you cannot forego during your time as a sole trader (but especially so during the beginning). Make sure to know how much you are spending on your business, how much you are profiting, and continually evaluate whether any trade offs are worth it.

Also look at financial predictions of not only your business but also the surrounding industry economy to gain a better insight into your financial future. Extra yet important money factors such as tax also need to be factored in when learning about your business finances. There is no use in making money if you do not understand how it works, so be sure to either learn financial account management yourself or endorse in the services of a professional accountant - preferably one which specialises in sole traders.

Social skills

A lot about meeting clients customers and maintaining supplier relationships is built on the level of your social skills. If you have poor social skills, chances are, no one will want to do business with you. However, if you are a friendly and outgoing person who reaches out to others appropriately, your business is sure to gain traction fast. Don’t hesitate to grow your social skills by interacting more with others - whether family or friends - and attend networking events to meet the right business people.

It’s not easy dedicating all your energy and time to being a sole trader, but once successful, the results will always be incredibly rewarding. To help increase your chances of hitting the jackpot, be sure to understand and possess what it takes to become a successful sole trader.
