India is home to millions of street children. Unfortunately, there has been a spike in the population of street-dwelling children who live in some of the most vulnerable environments. The harsh conditions of the streets are more volatile and harmful for children than one may fathom.

Children are found on the streets of Delhi/NCR – either selling something or at traffic signals, begging for alms, rag pickers or engaging in child labour activities like working at the local dhaba or with any of the street vendors. Many children are even picked up by gang. Children are found on the streets due to various reasons - from psychological, financial, societal, to merely the hand of luck, rather the lack of it, where they get separated from their families at railways stations and crowded places. Read on to know more:

Several children run away from home due to abuse. Illiteracy and acute poverty often lead to many families practising violence in multiple forms – domestic abuse and other such harsh home situations.Sometimes, children face abuse that affects their psyche and makes them more vulnerable. This becomes a strong ...
... driving force for them to leave home and the cruelty that they face, in search of a better place to live in. Sadly, street life is much worse and even more unforgiving.

This is why children on the streets need to be urgently rescued as well as rehabilitated in a proper and delicate manner. The process starts by carefully monitoring the situation on the streets and closely working with the authorities like the police to understand the street culture and how the children can be saved.

Salaam Baalak Trust, a reputed and well-known non-profit organization in India helps rescue street children and ensures a happy and safe environment.
