When it comes to illnesses and diseases, they say that prevention is better than cure and they’re right. In the new normal when even a slight cough, cold or similar such symptoms can be construed as a sign of something far more serious and grievous, prevention of illnesses has become more important than ever before. The fewer diseases your body has to fight, the stronger your immunity stays so that it can fight against more serious illnesses like COVID-19. So before looking up cold and cough remedies online, you can look up the prevention of cold and cough at home.

1. Frequent hand washing
The most common means of spreading cold is when a sick person coughs or sneezes into their hands and then touches objects or surfaces around them. Cold causing virus or germs can be active on these objects for at least a few hours of getting transferred. When a healthy person touches these surfaces, the germs get transferred into their bodies which makes them fall sick. To avoid contracting a cold virus like this, it is recommended that you frequently wash your hands throughout the day for at least 20 seconds per wash. And ...
... don’t forget the soap! This kills all the germs on your hands and prevents them from making you sick.

2. Wearing a mask
While wearing a mask has become a big part of the new normal, we’ve also slowly realised its importance without the dangers of COVID-19 looming around. Another common means of spreading the cold virus is when a sick person coughs or sneezes into the open. Tiny droplets containing the virus and germs are expelled from their body and into the atmosphere. If a healthy person breathes in those droplets, they can get sick with a cold too. This is why it’s advisable for both the sick person and the healthy person to be wearing masks so as to curb the spread of the cold or flu virus. If you suffer from incessant coughing bouts, you can consider relying on a cough medicine like a cough suppressant that will control your body’s urge to cough.

3. Making Vitamin D your best friend
Some studies have shown that people not getting enough vitamin D are more likely to develop a respiratory illness as compared to those who get more than enough of it. But research also shows that more than one billion people around the globe don’t get enough vitamin D in their body. This is because the sun is the main source of vitamin D and it cannot easily be found in many food items. This is also the reason it’s called the sunshine vitamin. So if you suffer from vitamin D deficiency, you should consult your doctor for supplements in order to keep the cold and cough away from you.

4. Disinfecting your phone
Did you know that a study found that our phones might be carrying 10 ten times more germs than a toilet seat? And when you think of it, it could make sense. Most people don’t really disinfect their phones but imagine the number of random surfaces that it comes in contact with. We’ve already established that the cold virus can stay active on objects and surfaces for hours after they’ve been transferred. This makes it extremely crucial to regularly disinfect our phones to make sure that it isn’t a playground for germs and viruses.

While a cough and cold can be extremely common, it doesn’t mean you have to suffer through them. Because let’s be honest, the hassle of medicines and cough syrup can be irritating at times. Just a few preventative measures go a long way in saving us the trouble of dealing with these illnesses.
