storage guidelines fresh
Storing fresh food properly is necessary for you and your family’s health. First, you should purchase food that is within the manufacturer’s freshness date. For meat and dairy products, you can see “sell-by date” to make sure you are buying fresh food. After buying fresh food you can keep it fresh if you store it properly.
There are a number of food storage methods but the most used way is storing it in the fridge or freezer. At the commercial level freezer rooms are used for food storage. In the past, different storage methods like pickling and drying were used. But now with improved technology, it is easier to store food. Food packaging, humidity, and temperature matter a lot in food storage otherwise food can be spoiled.
If you don’t follow proper food storage guidelines, food will spoil rapidly which will evident from off-color, ...
... off-odors, and off-flavors. Here we have gathered essential fresh food storage guidelines that you should know for its proper storage.
Consider FIFO Rule in Storage Too
Usually, we use FIFO (first-in-first-out) rule when we consume products. It is recommended to consume the first stored item first then the item stored later. But while storage and or stocking storage area with fresh food do apply the FIFO rule. Put the recently purchase fresh food behind the items you already have.
Moreover, keep the fresh food away from non-food items like a household cleaner, insecticides, and paper products. Otherwise, due to contamination, food can be spoiled. Label the food with the storage date and put it in the freezer if you are not going to eat in a day or two.
When Power Goes Out
If the power supply has disconnected due to any reason, minimize fridge or freezer opening. Fridges and freezers keep the food cold due to their insulation. But if you will open the door often, it will lose cooling. Moreover, block ice usage may also increase the refrigerated food’s shelf-life.
You can refreeze the fresh food already stored in the freezer if it still has ice crystals. But if the food is cold but thawed, you should cook it within 24-hours. You can also use dry ice to keep food frozen.
Fresh Vegetable Storage Guidelines
Fresh vegetables if stored after removing air at 40°F in the refrigerator while maintaining optimum humidity can be store for a long time. In the refrigerator, you can store fresh vegetables for up to 5 days. Wrap the leafy vegetables properly in moisture-proof bags to prevent wilting.
Store root vegetables, rutabagas, eggplant at 50°F to 60°F at a well-ventilated place. Additionally, tomatoes can be stored at room temperature. Store beets, carrots, and radishes after removing tops. It will extend their shelf-life by reducing moisture loss.
Fresh Fruits Storage Guidelines
Fresh fruits can also be stored in a cold area or in the refrigerator. Store fruits in covered containers. It will reduce moisture loss and will increase the shelf-life of fruits. Keep a separate storage area for fruits in the refrigerator otherwise, their taste or odor may change due to other freezer items.
Additionally, store ripe eating apples separately in the refrigerator. Before storage, make sure you have separated rotten apples and store the fresh apples without washing them.
Meat and Poultry Storage Guidelines
These foods are highly perishable and can be hazardous if not stored according to proper storage guidelines. Fresh cuts of meat contain spoilage bacteria that spoil the meat after 2 to 3 days if stored in market packaging in the refrigerator. Ground meat is more at risk of spoilage.
Store ground meats within 24 hours of purchase in the refrigerator at 33°F to 36°F. You can store the whole meat for 4 to 12 months in the freezer if you wrap it in moisture-proof packaging.
