Finally, Toyota Enters The Ev Market
Toyota Motor Corp. takes the credit to be the best of the hybrid powertrain, by introducing new technology like emissions-reducing technology with its first-generation Prius which was released in 1997. But the Toyota is taking a much different approach when it comes to the next great evolution in the industry, the battery-electric vehicle.
Toyota used to lead the world in electric-powered vehicles. In another word, it was the Japanese giant which led the way for hybrid vehicles. Toyota is continuing to builds and sell all types of hybrids, but, as other automakers moved from hybrids to pure battery-electric vehicles, Toyota didn’t put the right investments to take the next leap of hope. As a result, the automaker finds itself a little outdated in the industry, trailing many other brands in the pure-electric segment.
An Exception for an electric C-HR crossover in China launched earlier this year and a Lexus SUV which is preparing to touch ...
... the road in 2021, but Toyota has no plans to manufacture a mass-market battery-electric vehicle, or BEV, by 2025. In reflex, Volkswagen AG has said that it intends to produce about 1.5 million BEVs in the same year, a goal that will require about €33 billion of investment to achieve.
Toyota is not going to stand still when it comes to electrification. “BEVs are increasing faster than original expectations,” said COO Shigeki Terashi in 2019. His position is understandable since it is a matter of death or survival. Unless Toyota works on this in a disciplined manner, they will not be able to ensure their future survival so that is why they are focused so much on BEVs and building this model now.
The company’s stated aim is for 1 million battery-electric and expiation to produce hydrogen fuel cell car sales by 2030 but as said by executives this could be achieved several years earlier. Still, it equates only to just one-tenth of its global car sales in 2019. A goal for 4.5 million annual hybrid sales by the end of the decade would probably make more than half its cars electrified. When compared, Volkswagen’s 2030 BEV target is 40%.
The Toyota was established in 1933 with the company then being a division of Toyoda Automatic Loom Works, which was dedicated to the production of cars under the management of the founder’s son, Kiichiro Toyoda. Kiichiro Toyoda had traveled to Europe and the United States in 1929 to study automobile production and had started researching gasoline-powered engines in 1930.
Toyoda Automatic Loom Works was given the right moral and financial support to develop automobile production by the Japanese government, which needed domestic vehicle production, due to the war with China. Kiichiro Toyoda snapped this opportunity to establish the Automotive Production Division on September 1, 1933, and began preparing to build prototype vehicles. In 1934, the division manufactured its first Type A Engine, which was used in the Model A1 passenger car in May 1935 and G1 truck in August 1935. Production of the Model AA passenger car began around 1936.
Technically, these new vehicles will not be the first of their kind from Toyota. Looking a little back 1990s Toyota sold a battery-electric version of the RAV4 only to the California residents. And also, Toyota currently offers the Mirai sedan strictly for California. Instead of using battery packs, the Mirai is one of a kind hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle with an electric motor. It offers a lot of range and refueling systems similar to cars with internal combustion engines, but presently there isn’t a hydrogen infrastructure in place to support the mass production of fuel cell vehicles.
