Ever heard of Monkey Virus? Monkey Virus spreads only through Floppy disks and affects Master Boot Record (MBR) of hard drives and the boot records of floppies. This virus moves the MBR from the first sector to the third, replaces the same with its own code. When booting normally from system's local hard disk, the virus gets activated but everything seems to perform normally for the user.

Monkey virus is a quite common boot sector virus that can leave you Windows in an unbootable condition. It retains a weird behavior and so it uses the stealth technology to hide its presence. Now that it encrypts the original data of your partition table, and you try booting the Windows based computer from a floppy disk, the system fails to recognize the hard drive and displays the following error occurs:

‘Invalid drive specifications'

But when you boot with the affected hard disk, the partition table is accessible and everything seems to be just normal. This happens as the monkey virus has replaced the MBR code of hard disk by its own code and moves the MBR to hard drive's third sector. It occurs due to the moved ...
... partition- which also makes your hard disk drive inaccessible when you boot with floppy.

Now if you are sure that your computer's Windows has been infected from Monkey virus, we suggest you not to run commands such as /fixmbr or fdisk /mbr etc. Attempting to run such commands might just damage your partition table and MBR severely instead of resolving the issue.

Don't use any disk editor that claims to retrieve your MBR back just as it was actually before the corruption. The disk editor might be successful in removing the virus cases, but your Windows wont boot after using this. When you use any anti-virus software for removing the Monkey virus, make sure that it is able to decrypt the partition table. Ignoring this might just result in serious data loss from your hard disk drive.

Now the question that arises is how can you remove this Monkey virus? Well, just use any of the measures given below, to flush Monkey virus out of your computer:

Restore MBR and partition table from a virus-free backup copy of your data.

If possible, locate the original zero track, decrypt the information and move it back to the original place.

Use a professional and quality antivirus software

Repartition the hard disk, reformat the logical drives and restore the lost data from a previous backup.

If in case, you find out that your data backup copy is invalid or absent, use recover disk tool to restore all your data. These special recover disk tools scan your Windows disk and recover disk or Windows data safely.
