The light detection and ranging technology entail a new remote sensing technology that employs light in a pulsed laser form to determine distances to targets. It does this by shooting laser light beams at targets and measuring how long it will take before the light comes back to the sensor.
This new lighting technology uses pulsed laser beams to correctly map out environments, using a mechanism known as "time of flight" measurement. This mechanism emits a laser beam in an object's direction. The light is then reflected off the item and received by a sensor inside the LiDAR module. While returning, the beam brings information about the object it had contact with. This information includes the object's distance and optical traits like reflectivity.
The LiDAR technology can be likened to sonar and radar technologies that use waves and radio sensors. However, it records many significant improvements above the two traditional technologies, especially in sensing and precision.
Even though radar can sense a vehicle's location from a distance, it only recognizes the area as a featureless "blip." This quality can offer ...
... value for air traffic control and other such roles. However, it is not adequate for the unique up-close-and-personal dynamics that are obtainable with automobile driving. This is unlike the LiDAR technology, whose laser permission can map a vehicle's or environment's features visually. The technology is called "point cloud," and it involves a map of single laser measurements that are so closely populated that it takes the form of tangible physical objects on display.
A LiDAR sensor's components are made up of three technologies operating inherently. They include:

The Laser Ranging Device: this mechanism functions to send out pulses and calculate the range or distance to a target. It transmits pulses and calculates elevation values by recording the delay in time between transmission of the light pulse and its reception.
Global Positioning System (GPS): the GPS mechanism functions to provide information about the LiDAR's location. It does this by reporting the location of the instrument on which the LiDAR sensor is mounted.
The Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU): the IMU mechanism functions to measure the LiDAR's angular and linear motion.

According to Amar Naveganghi, Director of Remote Sensing at LUMITEX, the result of data collected through LiDAR will be a data set that can offer value for creating high-resolution maps and 3D models. LiDAR technology can also be useful for performing several tasks, including vehicle automation, detecting obstacles in autonomous vehicles, among many others. Indeed, the technology can contribute significantly to advancing roadway safety, easing highway traffic, preventing automobile crashes, and saving people's lives.
Conclusion
Despite being a relatively new technology, LiDAR is already contributing significantly to the autonomous mobility industry. Moreover, the sensor technology is set to grow and gain more popularity soon.
Another good news is that LiDAR's application is not limited to only autonomous mobility. The technology has demonstrated exceptional promise towards the capacity to achieve much more, even in other fields. Indeed, it would be best if you were among the first people to enjoy the benefits of this technology. So, do not hesitate to adopt it if you have a project that could benefit from it.
