The backbone of every good massage is your massage tables, a vital and important part of every massage therapists’ practice, so it’s vital you look after them and keep them clean and sanitised
 
Here are some positive tips on how to maintain and care for your massage tables so they serve you well for years:
 
Looking After the Upholstery
Use good quality fitted sheets on your massage tables to prevent any massage or natural body oils from making direct contact with the upholstery as they can stain and over time damage the leather.
 
The best sheets are made of brushed cotton, they are durable easy to clean and comfortable for your clients. You can easily and quickly change them between clients providing a fresh sanitary surface for them to lie on.
 
If you use shape objects such as acupuncture needles or hot cups it’s a good idea to place a thick towel under the fitted sheet to ensure the upholstery is not damaged or punctured

Never use harsh chemicals or cleaners on your upholstery, follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions.
The best method is to use mild soap and warm water; the same way as if you were sanitising your hands then rinse it off with clean water. A purpose brought sponge is ideal for cleaning the upholstery and drying off after.
Avoid using alcohol based sanitisers as they will destroy the surface and damage the fibers.
 
Maintaining the base and legs
Many massage tables are made from extruded aluminum which is almost maintenance free, all you need to do is wipe them down after each use and if you have a folding or portable table apply a suitable lubricant to the hinges and moving parts.
 
Wooden tables take a bit more to look after, the timer needs to be kept clean and a good quality polish applied at least weekly.
The screws, nuts and bolts used to fasten the table together must be checked on a regular basis. Because massage tables are subject to a lot of movement during massage sessions and as clients are getting on and off.
 
Choose massage tables with high quality foam, and do not allow your table to experience either extreme heat or cold conditions. If your table is portable it’s always best to move it around in its case or cover.
Never store your massage table where it can be in direct sunlight. Leaving it in your car is a sure way to reduce its working life as the temperature in a parked car can at times be very hot or very cold.
 
Many modern massage tables have removable face holes that can attach at either end. It’s important to switch ends so the upholstery wears evenly. If you have massage tables that allow you to turn over the padded squab this, should be done every time you change the fitted sheets which will also help prolong the working life of your table
 
Massage tables will benefit by using a quality fitted sheet, regular cleaning, checking the attached hardware and adjusting as necessary.
