How Will Immigration Change Under Joe Biden?
Come January 20, a new administration will be taking office. President-elect Joe Biden promised a lot of changes during his campaign, and immigration was one topic that people are particularly interested in. Here’s the latest immigration news related to Joe Biden’s plans when he takes office.
Reversing Trump’s Policies With “Guardrails”
For the most part, Joe Biden’s plan is to reverse a large portion of Trump’s immigration policies. His first order of business is to process asylum seekers as quickly as possible. According to immigration news sources, Biden has claimed that this process will probably take up to six months to put in place, due to the need to install asylum judges and prevent too large of an influx of immigrants at the border.
Biden and his administration are walking back a few of their “day one” promises, with the reasoning that they don’t want to cause complications or overwhelm processing capacity.
The Migration Protection Protocols are one of these walk backs. These protocols were put in place under the Trump administration. ...
... Under these protocols, migrants are sent back to Mexico to wait, often in squalid conditions, while their claims are being processed. The plan to roll these back is still in place, but the day one termination is no longer in play.
Biden and his cabinet are against these policies but say that it will take time to roll them back and put new measures in place. Biden is also looking to improve conditions in Central American countries so their residents have less of a motivation to want to leave their home country.
Regarding the construction of the border wall, Biden also promised that no more building would be done on it.
As many immigration news outlets report, the rush to reverse the previous administration’s measures sooner rather than later is urgent, because thousands of migrants are struggling to get by in high-crime border cities as they await their processing.
