What Is Docusate Sodium?
This product is used to treat infrequent constipation. Some medications and illnesses can make constipation more likely. Feaces softeners such as docusate are often the first method used for stopping and curing this type of constipation. Docusate is often used when straining to have a bowel movement should be avoided (e.g., after a heart attack or surgery).
Docusate is a feaces softener. It works by increasing the amount of water the feaces absorbs in the gut, making the feaces softer and easier to pass.
How do I use Docusate Sodium?
Follow all instructions on the product package unless otherwise directed by your doctor. If you are uncertain about any of the information, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
Take this medication by mouth, commonly at bedtime with a full glass (8 ounces or 240 milliliters) of water or juice, or as instructed by your doctor. The dosage is based on your medical situation and response to therapy. Reduce your dose or stop taking this medication if you develop diarrhea.

If you are using the drops, measure the medication with the device provided, or use a device to ensure you have the accurate dose. Mix the syrup, liquid or drops in 4 to 8 ounces of fruit juice, milk or infant formula to prevent throat irritation and mask a bitter taste.
Use this medication only when needed. Do not use this product for more than 1 week unless instructed by your doctor.
Relief is generally seen in 1 to 3 days.
Inform your doctor if your condition worsens.
What are the side effects of this drug?
Many products can cause side effects. A side effect is an unwanted response to a products when it is taken in normal doses. Side effects can be calm or severe , temporary or long term. If you are concerned about side effects, talk the risks and benefits of this products with your doctor.
The following side effects have been found by at least 1% of people taking this product. Many of these side effects can be controlled, and some may go away on their own over time.
These side effects and they are harsh or bothersome. Your pharmacist may be able to advise you on controlling side effects. These include:
skin rash
stomach or intestinal cramping
throat irritation (if using liquid forms)
Some people may experience side effects other than those listed. Check with your doctor if you realize any symptom that worries you while you are taking this product.
