Dental Health doesn't only impact your teeth and gums as per common notion but is also responsible for the overall health of your body because it quite literally begins with the mouth, everything you take in. The major reason why so many of us skip our yearly or semiannual dental checkups is that we fear that it'll be costly and expensive hence decide not to go all together. However, with simple practices and everyday rituals dental care (which greatly impacts your overall health) can be made inexpensive and easy.

As was rightly said by Martin H. Fischer, "If a person cannot clean his teeth, no dentist can clean them for him." Let's find out some easy to do ways that you can incorporate in your routine and see great results:

1. What goes inside, shows outside

The secret to beautiful pearly whites or healthy pink gums is simply watching what you put inside. Highly acidic foods tend to erode the enamel - an outer layer to your teeth that protects them from bacterial invasion and build-up of plaque, so avoid having a lot of those in one go. As for protection against cavities and tooth decay, you could chew ...
... on neem leaves, use turmeric or keep cloves in your mouth overnight as and when you feel any pain or unusual sensation and of course plan a visit to the dentist as soon as possible. Spices are known to have highly anti-bacterial traits and likewise for peppermint.

Furthermore, totally unavoidable is the importance of minerals and having a nutritious diet regularly. Your body protects your teeth through your saliva. However, without the appropriate nutrients in it, your saliva will lack the minerals required to protect and strengthen your teeth.

2. You don't have to brush all your teeth, just the ones you want to keep

Of course, you don't want to lose any teeth, which is why brushing is the most ritualized and important practice to keep your teeth clean and germ-free. Make sure to brush your teeth in a circular motion and not be too harsh and rigorous with your brushing as that can erode the enamel, and eventually teeth and gum with hypersensitivity. The idea is to simply clean your teeth in such a way that plaque and other stuck materials from food are cleaned out, so you can have a fresh clean mouth. Brush twice, one when you rise and when you go to bed at night.

3. Flossing today so you can be flexing tomorrow

Flossing helps targets and cleans the hard to reach areas where a brush cannot reach. Flossing cleans the collected debris and plaque that causes cavities, bad breath and other problems. Get an unwaxed, natural floss to reach between the mid spaces of your teeth and below the gums where plaque, leftover food particles, and bacteria hang out. Even though there no such substantial evidence of flossing being advantageous, ADA continues to recommend it. It goes without saying that you shouldn't smoke as it not only causes bad breath but also lowers your body's immunity levels to fight against any building cavities or bacterial infections.

4. Drinking water is like washing out your insides

Prefer water over sugary drinks and food. Experts also claim that starchy foods, such as chocolates, bread, chips, and pasta, can lead to tooth decay. The ADA has studies showing that these foods linger in the mouth and break down to become simple sugars, on which acid-producing bacteria feed. It's this acid that causes tooth decay. Water not only keeps your body hydrated but also helps wash away food particles and bacteria dwelling on it in your mouth. Also, the body uses water to produce saliva that neutralizes the acidity, protecting tooth enamel from eroding or weakening.

Make it a ritual to rinse your mouth with water or mouthwash (best) after every meal. This will eliminate bits and particles of food and boost the remineralization process.

5. Don't fear the dentist, fear the plaque

Most essentially don't fear the dentists, they're experts for a reason. They are in place and charge only to ensure your body and teeth's longevity. Don't be rigid and be complaisant to the treatment and diagnosis, so that the results are the best for your own sake.

6. Teeth aren't pearly until you smile

Lastly but most essentially keep smiling and never let anyone or anything let it fade away. No matter what dental issues or personal life problems, with a smile on your face you can have a positive attitude most essential to combat any and every problem. So keep brushing, flossing, eating healthy, hydrating yourself and don't forget to visit the experts to preserve your teeth for longer!
