A dry cough can be caused due to a variety of reasons, from acid reflux to allergies. At times, this cough can also occur with no signs of an underlying reason. A dry throat can be incredibly debilitating and can cause an issue in your day to day life.

The following are the possible causes that may explain your dry cough:

Asthma

Though a cough is not a very prominent symptom of asthma, it is a common one. One form of Asthma called cough variant asthma (CVA) where dry cough is a chronic symptom.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease

Also known as GERD, Gastroesophageal reflux disease is when acid from your stomach frequently flows up your oesophagus, this acid then tends to irritate your throat and create a natural cough reflex. If you have a chronic cough, it is recommended to check if you have an acid reflux problem.

Prescription Drugs

Certain medicines used to treat blood pressure and other such diseases often causes chronic cough as a side effect. If your dry cough is new, and is not due to any of the other causes, and you have simultaneously started a new prescribed medicine, it is best to look into that, and find ways to manage and relive the cough.

At the end of the day, no matter what has caused your dry cough, it is one of those illnesses that always seems to be with you for the long haul. Often this can be irritating as it would affect your sleep schedule and general life quality. Over the counter medications, to relieve the cough, or medicines that release moisturising qualities to soothe an irritated throat can also help keeping the symptoms at bay temporarily. Remedies like ginger and honey, or soothing cooling over the counter syrups will also help your cause.
