With the weather hotting up, our thoughts are turning away from bulky winter coats and towards fashion''s more revealing side. Yes, it''s summer once again ? and that means the start of swimwear season.

There''s just one top contender for the swimwear fashion crown this season, and that is the classic one piece. That''s right, bikinis have lost their allure and instead fashionistas types are touting cossies worthy of the most glamorous Bond heroine.

The trend was set at Miami Fashion Week, where one pieces were simply everywhere. Ed Hardy''s Spring/ Summer swimwear collection set the tone, showcasing hot swimsuits reminiscent of tattoo designs. As Hardy demonstrated, it''s still possible to flash plenty of flesh without opting for a bikini ? his stark cut-outs took sexy to a whole new level.

So, how do you look great while wearing a one piece? To keep your look up to date, the key is to avoid traditional lines and go for experimental designs: look for crossovers, cut-outs and off the shoulder pieces. Colours at Miami Fashion Week ranged from classic black to garish reds, and cute florals, geometric prints ...
... and animal print designs were all very much in evidence.

If you''re lucky enough to have a fabulous figure to show off and can''t bring yourself to abandon your bikini, then fashion has an option for you too. Bikinis were still much in evidence at Miami, but the catwalk showed that traditional shapes are out, replaced by one-shouldered designs. Designers such as Marios Schwab combined the one-shouldered and cutaway trends, while Gottex cheated with a halter neck design.

Whatever trend you choose to work, make sure you wow the poolside crowd with a liberal helping of glamour. Swimwear accessories are still very much in style, with bangles, necklaces and rings all in evidence on the catwalk. Many models also wore sheer cover-ups over their costumes.

The great thing about the sheer trend ? which is embodied by cutaway slips and full-length summer dresses ? is that it can transform even the most ordinary swimsuit into something cutting edge and rather spectacular. Great if you''re intending to keep last year''s costume but still want to stay in style.

To make your sheer slip look even more glam, choose a piece in a metallic shade. Quite simply: If it doesn''t sparkle, then don''t buy it. Barton Loi is a freelance fashion writer. They recommend New Look for low-cost and stylish swimwear.
