5 Miniature Garden Trends For 2021
It’s almost a new year! Are you ready for a fresh start? I am certainly looking forward to new growth, new opportunities—and plenty of newness in the miniature garden. Whether you are stepping cautiously towards 2021 or barreling ahead at full speed, you are probably starting to think about your fairy gardening goals for the coming year. To help you kick-start your January winter container garden, summer rain garden, and everything in between, I have compiled a list of the top five miniature garden trends for 2021. Keep reading to see the latest and greatest fairy garden styles you might want to incorporate into your own miniature garden.
1) Veggies Everywhere
I tend to focus on miniature gardens and fairy gardens, but almost everyone I know who does “life-size” gardening is having a go at growing their own food. 2020, with all of its curveballs, has taken a toll on the health and wealth of families across the country. For that reason, more and more people are taking an interest in “Victory Gardens,” like those that were popular during World War I and World War II. Today, I am seeing everything from ...
... apartment-sized herb gardens to backyards filled with rows and rows of vegetables.
What does this mean for the fairy garden? Well, since miniature gardens often reflect real life, I suspect we will be seeing plenty of teeny-tiny veggie patches in 2021. With a few pieces of mini fencing, some DIY signs, and a miniature wheelbarrow, you can turn your winter container garden into a small-scale farm fit for a fairy family.
2) Gardening with Kids
Along with plenty of stress, 2020 brought with it lots (and lots) of family time. If the little ones in your life have played every video game, finished each craft, and consumed the entirety of the pantry, now might be the time to get them into gardening! Look to early Spring of 2021 to set aside a tiny patch, container, or wheelbarrow for your young gardeners. One or two miniature plants, child-sized gardening gloves, clothes that can get dirty, and some child-friendly miniature fairies are all you need for family fun in the fairy garden.
If you have a child who you suspect will fall in love with gardening, start now! With just a few supplies and a windowsill or patio, they can get started on their own winter container garden. You might already have the winter plants you need for an afternoon of creative planting.
3) Small Spaces
In 2020, we all learned how to make do with the spaces we have, no matter their size. In the coming year, we are likely to see even more balcony gardens and windowsill gardens. Look closely as you walk around your neighborhood, and you might see winter container gardens on porches, balconies, and patios. You do not need a mega-yard in order to plant a fairy garden. In fact, all you really need is a small container! I cannot wait to see the creative small gardens that pop up in 2021.
4) White Gardens
This next trend is extra-stylish. Experts predict that 2021 will be the year of the minimalist garden featuring white flowers. We can expect dark backdrops, dark green foliage, and bright pops of white florals. This simple, minimal garden style can help a small space look large. If you want to get in on the trend early, start by adding some white winter flowering plants to your winter container garden!
5) Shopping Online
Last, but certainly not least, there is one gift of convenience that 2020 has brought us. Shopping online! Most gardeners are used to stopping by their local greenhouses and garden stores to find things like seeds, miniature accessories, winter flowering plants, and more. However, in an effort to stay safe, many garden enthusiasts have pivoted to ordering their fairy houses and miniature plants online. No need to drive to the greenhouse. You can bring the garden to you!
What do you think? Are there any miniature garden trends we missed? As well all head into the new year with hope and expectation, we cannot wait to see what grows in fairy gardens and miniature gardens across the country.
