Entering The State Of Ihram; When’s The Best Time?

The state of Ihram must be assumed by a pilgrim before crossing the boundary of Meeqat in the region. If someone has crossed the Meeqat boundary without having entered the state of Ihram, a penalty will be due in atonement, yet the Hajj or Umrah would remain valid for performance.

What is Meeqat?

Meeqat are the pre-determined places of wearing Ihram on all the four sides of Makkah, as prescribed and set for Muslims by Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (SAWW). The five places of Meeqat for the pilgrims travelling for Umrah & Hajj are;
1. For people travelling from West, Egypt or Syria; Al-Juhfah, also referred to as “Rabegh”.
2. For people coming from Madinah; Dhul-Hulaifah, also referred to as “Abyar Ali”.
3. For the people approaching from Iraq; Dhatul-Irq.
4. For the people arriving from Najd and Taif; Qarn-Al-Manazel.
5. For the people coming from India, Pakistan and Yemen by sea;
Yalumlum.

Assuming you chose to wear Ihram before the point of Meeqat while travelling by air, you will have multiple options on where you go and change into your Ihram attire but depending on the airline you’re flying with.

Flying through a non-Islamic Airlines.

If you’re flying with a non-Islamic airline such as British Airways from the UK, there will be no on-board facilities where you’ll be able to pray or get changed for Ihram. Thus, it’s advised to put on your Ihram attire at the airport or prior to your departure. So that peace of mind can be guaranteed.
Additionally, you should pronounce your intention and recite Talbiyah on the plane, only when the Meeqat boundary approaches; in order to enter into the state of Ihram.

Flight with Islamic Airlines.

If you’re flying with an Islamic airline such as of Saudia Arabia, you will have complete access to a prayer area even during the course of your international flight. About 20 to 30 minutes before reaching the Meeqat boundary, you will be informed by the captain or a message will appear on the screen; informing pilgrims that the Meeqat is approaching. At this point, one should immediately get changed into Ihram attire, if you haven’t done so already, and recite Talbiyah as well as make intention for Umrah.

All in all, for a majority of Muslims it’s always advised that they wear Ihram from their hometowns i.e., before departure. As it saves them time as well as liberates from the hassle of on-board Ihram changing. However, if you’re not flying directly to Saudi Arabia and have a stopover in another country for a sufficient period, you’re advised to change into the Ihram during that stopover but before your departure to Saudia Arabia.
