The word “suicide” is a taboo and very much avoided in conversations. It is seen as something alien in life. Yet, there are people committing suicide every year. According to the World Health Organization, every year, 1 million people die from suicide, and every 40 seconds, one suicide happens in the world. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among 15-to-29-year-olds globally. And India has the highest rate of suicide in the world between 15-to-29-year-olds. These statistics tell us that it is important to speak openly about this topic.

Suicide is an extreme step in life, and what makes a person think of this extreme step? Various situations and challenges drive a person to think and attempt suicide. Challenges could be related to job, aspirations, relationships, health, finances, education, etc. It could be love failure or poor grades or financial losses or series of failures or health issues etc.

It does not matter whether the person is rich or poor, educated or uneducated, male or female, young or old. Everyone has their own set of challenges. When these challenges are utilized in the right direction, ...
... they lead to new opportunities and new doors in life. However, not everyone will have enough strength to face challenges in life. And that’s nothing to be ashamed of. It happens. Some of us are not enough prepared emotionally and mentally to handle tough situations in life.

Rather than challenges faced by the person, its one’s own thoughts that drive a person to suicide. Challenge or situation could be big, or small but certain thoughts make a person think of suicide. These thoughts are the reason why we see young students committing suicide or well-reputed businessmen committing suicide. It does not matter what they achieved in the past or what they have in life or their own capabilities, but when a person repeatedly thinks of below thoughts, there are high chances of committing suicide.

Thoughts that trigger suicidal tendencies:
1. I cannot live life like a failure.
2. Everyone around me is happy and successful, and only I am unhappy and a failure in life.
3. I failed everyone around me, and I failed as a person.
4. I can never be happy in life again.
5. I can never become successful in life.
6. My life is a failure.
7. I cannot face my family members and friends.
8. I feel ashamed of myself.
9. I cannot change my situation.
10. There is no solution to my problem.
11. I am alone in life.

When a person thinks these thoughts repeatedly, some people go into depression, and for some people, it’s more than depression where they feel death is better than life, and life is not worth living. Most of the time, a person with suicidal tendencies has a deep sense of failure and inability to face the failure.

Failure happens in life. Failure is inevitable in the journey of life. Failure can happen in relationships, finances, education, career, aspirations, etc. But is failure the end of the world? No. Failure teaches us valuable lessons, and it’s a system of feedback that tells us where we need to improve. Failure makes us wiser. Yes, failure hurts badly, but we should not be stuck with failure. We should learn lessons from the failure and move on.

Everyone who set out to achieve something big in life faced failures and rejections. Here are the stories of super-achievers who failed miserably but eventually moved on and gained massive success in life.

7 Failure to Success stories:
1. Abraham Lincoln, before he became 16th president of the US, had numerous failed businesses. He went bankrupt twice and was defeated in 26 campaigns.
2. Walt Disney, before he built Disney world, was fired from his job due to a lack of imagination and good ideas.
3. Bill Gates, before he built Microsoft, started a business named Traf-O-Data, which failed.
4. Amitabh Bachchan, before he became the legend of Indian Cinema, was rejected for his voice and appearance, and later, he faced bankruptcy in life.
5. Oprah Winfrey, before she became a successful television personality, was fired from her TV reporter job because she was “unfit for TV.”
6. Thomas Edison, who invented the bulb and several other inventions, was told by his teachers that he was “too stupid to learn anything.”
7. Akshay Kumar, one of the most successful Bollywood heroes, had failed in his school and had 14 flops back to back at one time in his career.

These stories prove the cliché – failure is the stepping stone of success. It’s common to fail in life and nothing to be ashamed of. Failure becomes a failure only when we don’t learn our lessons from it. There are many more opportunities in life if you move on from failure and learn your lessons.

Having suicidal thoughts is not a sign of weakness or cowardly nature. These thoughts are just an indication that the person needs help and support in life. So, how to overcome these thoughts and tendencies? What to do when you are going through suicidal tendencies?

7 WAYS TO HANDLE SUICIDAL TENDENCIES:
1. It’s important to understand that suicidal tendencies can be overcome, and suicide can be prevented. There are many tools that help you start life fresh, and suicide is not the solution to life’s problems. Challenges happen to everyone, and there are ways to overcome these challenges.

2. Take the support of suicide prevention helplines and get in touch with one of the volunteers of these lines. They are professional, well prepared, and help you get through your situation without being judgemental.

3. More than the actual challenging situation, one’s own emotions and thoughts drive a person to think of suicide. Two greatest tools – Yoga and Meditation – help a person work on these depressing emotions and thoughts. It just takes a few months of practice under a competent teacher to overcome these tendencies and see life from a new perspective. Yoga and Meditation are fantastic tools that help in promoting emotional and mental health. Invest your time in one of these tools and transform your life.

4. Occupy yourself with hobbies close to your heart. Do activities that bring you joy. It could be something as simple as watching comedy stuff or spending time close to nature. Keep yourself busy doing various activities in life which bring you joy and happiness.

5. Involve yourself in volunteering activities like giving your time for orphan children or teaching something you are good at to underprivileged people or feeding the poor etc. Many people in the world need your time and presence. You are precious, and your life is valuable. When you make others happy, the joy and satisfaction you feel inspires you to live longer and make a lasting impact in the world.

6. Trust in the divine plan. Sometimes, we don’t get what we want in life. Probably, there is something more wonderful than what we desire. It’s just a matter of time to understand the divine plan. Connect with the divine and gain strength from the creator who created this entire world.

7. Like the Great Buddha said, everything, including failure in life, is impermanent. Life is beyond success and failure. It’s not about winning or losing. It’s about becoming better each day and enjoying every moment of life. Follow Your Heart and live your life with passion. Focus on areas of life that you care about, like your health, finances, relationships, career, and work on them wholeheartedly.

These are some solutions that can help you overcome suicidal tendencies. Having suicidal tendencies is not wrong or shameful. Seek out the help and come out of them because your life is precious. Life is beautiful, with many opportunities to learn, to enjoy, and to make an impact. Suicidal tendencies are just like clouds temporarily hiding your glory. You have the power to remove these clouds and shine in full glory.

Live life in full glory and joy! Keep shining!
