Shaaban; the 8th month of an Islamic lunar calendar, precedes the holy month of Ramadan. It is one of the most beloved months to Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (SAWW), evident from hadith. The month of Shaaban is significant for many reasons yet it is often overlooked by many Muslims. The reason being, incredible miracles took place in the month of Rajab i.e. Al-Isra’ wal-Mi’raj, and during Ramadan i.e. the revelation of the Holy Quran, hence forgetting that Shaban is also a month to commemorate!
Here are a few significant events of Islamic History that took place during the month of Shaban.
Splitting of the Moon.
Allah almighty has always rewarded his prophets with some exceptional events i.e. miracles as a blessing. Similarly, among the many miracles given to the last prophet Hazrat Muhammad (SAWW) by Allah Almighty was the splitting of the moon into two equal halves.
It’s mentioned in the hadith of the Holy Prophet (PBUH); (description) The people of Makkah asked Allah’s Messenger Hazrat Muhammad (SAWW) to show them a miracle. To which, by the will of Allah Almighty he (SAWW) showed them that the ...
... moon split into two halves; between which they (the people of Makkah) saw the Mountain of light i.e. Hira mountain.
This momentous miracle occurred in the month of Shaban as mention in Quran (54:1).
Changing of the Qibla direction.
The first Qibla of Islam was Masjid-al-Aqsa, situated in Jerusalem. Muslims used to offer their prayers in its direction. However, on one day while Hazrat Muhammad (SAWW) was offering a Salah in Masjid-e-Qiblatayn, present in Madinah, Allah Almighty revealed to him (SAWW) to change the Qibla direction to Holy Kaabah, present in Masjid-al-Haram, Makkah. Hence, Allah’s messenger along with his (SAWW) companions, changed the Qibla direction from Jerusalem (Masjid-al-Aqsa) to Makkah (Holy Kaabah).
This also happened in the month of Shaaban as mentioned in the holy Quran (2:144)
The revelation of the Ayah commanding Salawat.
During Sha’ban, Allah Almighty commanded Muslims to send Salawat (blessings) upon the Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (SAAW). It is mentioned in the Holy Quran in the following words; (description) Indeed, Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet (SAWW). So, people who have believed i.e. Muslims should also invoke Allah’s blessings upon him (SAWW), and salute him (SAWW) with worthy greetings of peace. Al-Quran (33:56)
It’s also mentioned in the hadith of Holy Prophet (SAWW); (description) The person who is closest to me (SAWW) on the Day of Judgement is the one who has sent the most Blessings i.e. Salawat upon me (SAWW).
The 15th night of Shaban; Nisf Shaban.
The night of Nisf Shaban possesses remarkable importance in the Islamic religion. As it’s a night dedicated to seeking forgiveness from Allah Almighty and making Dua; a night upon which He specifically showers His mercy and generosity upon this universe!
