Causes of coughing
There are many causes of coughing. Some common causes include:
Irritants: pollution, smoking, inhaling secondhand smoke, chemical fumes, air fresheners and perfumes, etc.
Allergens: mold, pollen, dust, animal dander, etc.
Medical conditions: flu, common cold, infection in the upper respiratory tract, asthma, whooping cough, pneumonia, GERD i.e., gastroesophageal reflux disease, acute bronchitis, postnasal drip, sinus infections, bronchiectasis, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, lung cancer, heart failure, COPD i.e., chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
Within these conditions,
A wet cough is often caused by viruses or flu, or COPD i.e., chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
A dry cough is often a result of flu viruses and cold, acid reflux, allergies, irritants like the smoke of a cigarette, or ACE inhibitor medications.
A chronic or persistent cough usually lasts more than 3 weeks and can be caused because of asthma, lung diseases, heart disease, whooping cough or bronchitis.

Natural remedies to cure cough at home
When the cough is in its initial stages and you have ruled out the possibility of any serious underlying medical condition, you can treat your symptoms of cough with home remedies. If you take additional medications, it is advised to talk to your doctor before taking anything so that the remedies don’t interact with the medication.
●Stop smoking and try to avoid secondhand smoke
●You can use a humidifier that can help in loosening the mucus
●Lozenges and cough drops are helpful in soothing an irritated throat
●Keep hydrating, drink lots of water to make the mucus thin
●Saltwater gargle is helpful in clearing the mucus from the throat
●Have herbal tea or ayurvedic medicine for cough
●Ginger tea treats inflammation very well
●Honey acts as a great cough suppressant, especially during night time
●At night, you can use an extra pillow to elevate your head
●If you don’t have asthma, you can inhale hot steam for relief. It can be done by taking a hot shower or by pouring water into a bowl, then face the bowl and put a towel over your head to cover it properly and inhale.
●Menthol, which is also found in lozenges can be helpful in soothing a cough
●Turmeric is helpful in the digestive process in case the cough is caused by GERD
