Age is just a number. But these numbers play a crucial role in our life. They determine our formal education, eligibility to drive, vote, and a few other things. Also, if we are eligible to be a part of some workforce or enjoy retirement. Of course, these criteria are not too rigid, but then those are just exceptions. For most of us, these numbers do matter.
As a working professional, right now, there are high chances that you get to interact with at least four generations. And for a company, specifically its Human Resource (HR) department, gets to handle at least five generations. The traditionalists and baby boomers might be close to retirement but have not retired yet and generally are at higher management posts owing to their experience. The middle management generally comprises of generation X and Y. And generation Z is stepping into the workforce. But then, this is not a definitive structure. Especially with the startup culture at a boom, we see generation Z managing the other generations under its leadership.

... work. As the workforce gets younger with boomers stepping down and gen-Z stepping in, the values and culture at workplaces are changing drastically. These generations have a different style of working and communicating, different priorities and values, and entirely different expectations and goals. While this may sound interesting, it also gives rise to a complex kind of issues at workplaces.
While the baby boomers are rigid when it comes to office routine and work hours, gen Z prefers the flexibility of working location and hours. The older generation prefers face-to-face meetings, the younger ones rely on virtual meetings and instant messengers to get tasks done and touch base with everyone. The older generation prefers to work in its comfort zone and the younger tend to experiment, hates being typecast, and loves to explore options that they can get. And maintaining a company culture that is viable for all and caters to this huge diversity, is an arduous task for the company HR.
HR needs to craft policies that can cater to the varied expectations of these generations. They need to promote a culture that is free of negative stereotypes, focuses more on similarities rather than scream about differences, takes into account the need to grow as an individual, and is collaborative. Technology, here, can play an effective role through collaborative tools that help teams to interact, express opinions, share feedbacks, and more.
