As we eagerly await a new year and look forward to realizing new dreams and hopes, this year has been a learning experience for one and all. This year has been rough, to say the least, and one that brought about a sea-change in the way the world operates. Not a single facet has been left untouched by the effects of the pandemic and the real-world and virtual-world change that it has brought about.  

The Legal System in India has roots very old and as it is with old, deep-rooted trees, turning a new leaf is not that easy. The digital push to the legal system in India began in 2007 with the beginning of the e-Courts project. It took another seven years for the project to get a go-ahead and create the basic structure to begin the project. And finally, the e-Courts portal was launched.

However, the portal is more of a database and a real tool for justice. It sure is useful for both lawyers and the common people as it assembles the data, does analytical processing, and offers other tools for effective decision making. But this is not the only functionality that going digital would mean.

Being truly digital ...
... would mean that people can reach courts anytime, anywhere. There would be no obligation of being there in the courts physically. Being digital would mean the common people would have the liberty to choose their lawyer from a database where their legal journey will be open for people to know and then to decide. Being digital would mean a little bit of what the legal system went through this year and a much better of what it can be.
