While installing Windows XP, one must have encountered STOP error resulting in failure of installation process. In this article we would be discussing steps to eradicate this error issue. When you try to install Microsoft Windows XP on a new hard disk that is formatted with the NTFS file system, you may receive the following error:
Stop: c0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive (file): \SystemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE or its log or alternate.
This error occurs after Windows XP copies the installation files to the hard disk and the computer restarts.
Root cause of this problem
This problem may occur if one or both of the following conditions comes true:
A). The hardware where you are trying to install Windows XP is not compatible with Windows XP.
B). The hard disk where you are trying to install Windows XP is damaged.
Resolution
To resolve this error for smooth installation of Windows XP, you need to consider the following points.
1.First of all make sure that the hardware is compatible with Windows XP.
2.Secondly, use the recovery console ...
... to confirm that hard disk or file system is not damaged. Following are the steps for using recovery console:
a). Start your computer from the Windows XP CD drive. If prompted, select any options that you must select to start from the CD drive. It is to be noted that to start the computer from Windows XP CD drive, your CD drive or DVD drive must be configured to do this.
b). When you are prompted to select Repair or Recover, press R. This starts the Microsoft Recovery Console. Make a note that you may have to enter the number to specify the Windows XP installation in the hard disk.
c). When you are prompted, type the Administrator password. If the Administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.
d). Use the chkdsk command-line tool to examine the hard disks. At the command prompt, type chkdsk /r, and then press ENTER.
e). Read the results, and then take any steps that you must take to complete the process. For example, you may be prompted to run chkdsk /f to fix certain problems.
f). Restart the computer, and then try to run Setup again.
This way you can resolve this STOP error message and can successfully install Windows XP. In case there is damage to hard disk, then you need to replace it. And obviously you would be in need of professional hard disk recovery software, which can recover your lost or deleted or damaged hard disk data.
