Qualities Of A Successful Vet
As a veterinary doctor you will have to deal with different types of animals. Starting from cat and dog to big animals like cows and horses, you will deal with a variety of animals. In order to become a successful vet, you need to have certain qualities.
As a vet you need to be compassionate and passionate about what you do. You have to simply love animals. Unless you love them, you will not be able to connect with them and they will not respond to your treatment. Being a vet is not about giving meds to animals, you have to be genuinely in love with them. Animals can sense things.
Good communication skill is a must. You should be able to articulate well what you are saying. Explain things clearly to the pet owner so that he understands the gravity of the situation.
You have to be quick with your reflexes. When you are dealing with big animals like cows and horses you cannot predict their behavior. They can be tricky in their approach. Having a quick reflex helps in this situations. With the passage of time you will notice that your reflexes have improved a lot.
Having a good knowledge about the subject ...
... matter is of utmost importance. Unlike humans, animals cannot express what they are experiencing and the symptoms clearly. The pet owner explains all that he has noticed. And at times that may not be sufficient. But if the vet is an expert and knows his subject, he will understand what is wrong with the animal after few basic examinations.
Emergency situations can arise at any point of time. So you should be able to ensure a proper work life balance. Just because it is 3 am in the morning when you get a call you will refuse to go is against your medical ethics. You will have to administer to the animal as and when you will get a call. You don’t have any choice in it.
