Older Emploees In Telephone Survey Of Automobile Factory
The following is a recommendation from the director of personnel to the president of Professional Printing Company. "In a recent telephone survey of automobile factory workers, older employees were less likely to report that having a supervisor present increases their productivity. Among workers aged 18 to 29, 27 percent said that they are more productive in the presence of their immediate supervisor, compared to 12 percent for those aged 30 or over, and only 8 percent for those aged 50 or over. Clearly, if our printing company hires mainly older employees , we will increase productivity and save money because of the reduced need for supervisors.
The argument presented is unilateral and the conclusion is unreasonable. It indicates a possible relationship between the profit and employees' ages just because of the investigation that supervisors are less necessary for older employees. Links Of London The statistics show different ideas of employees of different ages. And it indicates the different levels of consciousness that people treat the work. This phenomenon indeed exists ...
... among workers. However, the conclusion that " hiring mainly old employees will increase the productivity and save money because of the reduced need for supervisors" is unreasonable.
We can see this question from two angles. Firstly, reasons of this phenomenon. Older workers have more working experiences than younger ones. So they are more familiar with the work and more conscious when they do it. So they think it's no necessary for them to have supervisors. On the contrary, young workers are new hands and not so experienced and proficient. So they need someone to give them proper instructions. In addition, the natural instinct of the young is to love fun and games. Their self-discipline is inferior to the old's. Supervisors can give them enough supervisal and management so it leads to the result of the investigation. Secondly, we can't draw the conclusion just from this superficial and single phenomenon. We must take all kinds of factors into consideration. And it exaggerates the efficiency of the young. The old are not so good in many aspects such as the energy, confidence, diligence, new ideas and creative power. Besides, the length of the young's service is longer than the old's. The company may improve the young's qualities and disciplines through Links London some training to solve the problem.
To sum up, the conclusion drawed from the investigation is unilateral and unreasonable. It's not the correct way to increase the profit by hiring mainly older workers instead of younger ones.
