Double Duvets: Buy What Fits You
A right duvet gives you comfortable sleep through all kinds of nights without making you feel too hot or cold. But the buying process becomes a bit overwhelming & confusing. You have to figure out which fill power you need? Should you opt for a natural or synthetic insert? Which stitching style suits your needs? The same process becomes easy when you have an insight knowledge of all the factors described above. This article summarizes the basic knowledge of duvet insert, fill power, thread count, & weight, to help you buy the best you deserve.
Before going to the main points let’s have a look at what is a double duvet?
Like any other Duvet, double duvet is a flat fabric bag filled with a padding material to bring comfort to the bed. The dimensions of a double duvet are 200 × 200 cm.
Thread count
Duvets are often covered by an outer shell or you can say that the duvet insert is inserted inside a flat bag called a duvet shell. It is mainly made from a moisture absorbing, soft, and plain fabric material. These fabrics come directly in ...
... contact with the body therefore their thread count means a lot. Thread count refers to the total number of threads woven in an inch square. The higher the thread count the softer and durable the duvet shells will be. Also, note that the density of the fabric increases with the increase in thread count. The higher the density the denser and thicker the material will be leading to a decrease in the breathability of the duvets. So you should opt for a thread count between 300 to 800 only.
Duvet insert
It refers to a filled bag that goes inside the duvet shell, a couple of best duvet inserts are given below.
Down: down inserts are warm, lightweight, and super breathable. They are made from the chest feather or duck and geese. These duvets are incredibly warm and provide you with the perfect cozy bed for winters. Before buying the duvet, always look for 100% down instead of only down. If 100% down isn't written on the label there's a possibility that only a few proportions of down out of 100 are added to it just to reduce the manufacturing cost. It is worthy to mention that geese down is cheaper than the duck feather so do not pay the same price if you are opting for a goose down duvet.
Silk: silk duvets are incredibly soft and warm. They are made from thick silk fibers that lead to an astounding softness. They are beneficial for those having any skin problems. Note that silk duvets are tough to maintain and expensive.
Microfiber / hollow fiber: both of these are the synthetic inserts and offer you the dreamingly soft, fluffy, plush, and durable duvets. They offer exceptional breath ability. Main feature of these duvets is, they are hypoallergenic and best for those having any skin or respiratory disorder. These duvets are available at affordable rates around the world.
Fill power
Fill power refers to the fluffiness of the duvets. It is usually written on the packing. The higher the fill power the better the quality and fluffiness of the duvets. Moreover, higher fill power indicated more thermal insulation, thickness, and warmth. Usually lightweight or summer duvets have a fill power of 400, round the year have 400 to 600, winter have 600 to 800, and the extra warm and fluffy duvets have 800 or above fill power.
Weight
Weight refers to the weight of the insert inside the duvet shell in ounces. Usually the down and synthetic filling have more fluffiness and warmth and less weight. Whereas cotton, silk, and wool have more weight and less fluffiness. The heavier the duvets the warmer they will be. Heavier duvets are suitable for winter whereas the lightweight ones are suitable for the summer. Note that, you should never opt for a too light or too heavy duvet if you want the right comfort.
