How To Prevent Your Children’s Dental Decay?
When you think about your baby’s wellbeing, dental care may not come to mind, but it’s a vital part of looking after your baby. The early ...
... start of good dental habits helps children grow up healthy. Most parents have a difficult time deciding how much orthodontic care their children require. They know they want to stop cavities, but the best way to do so is not always understood. Here are some tips.
When should you plan your child’s first trip to the dentist?
Organize a dentist appointment on the first birthday of your child, and continue every six months. Even if you can’t see teeth doesn’t mean that they aren’t there. In the second trimester of pregnancy, teeth finally begin to develop. The baby has 20 primary teeth at birth, some of which are fully formed in the jaw. So, parents can avoid dental issues long before a baby’s first tooth shows. During the first visit, the dentist will explain the importance of proper brushing and flossing techniques. These visits will help to detect issues early and will allow children to get used to seeing the dentist. As children grow, schedule regular dental check-ups anywhere from once every three months to once a year, based on your dentist’s recommendations.
When should you start brushing your baby’s teeth?
It is essential to take proper care of your baby’s teeth because developing good dental habits early ensures a lifetime of dental health. As soon as the first tooth of a baby pokes through the gums, you can start cleaning it with a clean, damp washcloth, a gauze pad, or a child’s soft toothbrush. Select a toothbrush that is built for kids. It ought to have a tiny head and soft bristles. From 18 months of age, a small pea-sized amount of children’s toothpaste (low fluoride) can be used. Always remember to brush the surfaces of the teeth and gums twice a day.
How to prevent cavities?
Cavities develop when food and bacteria are left on the teeth after eating are not brushed away. Acid settles on a tooth, weakening its enamel until it forms a void or cavity. Here’s how to keep cavities away:
• Start early with good oral habits – Teach children to brush with a fluoride toothpaste at least twice a day and to floss regularly. Replace toothbrushes every few months when, with use, the bristles are flattened. After lunch and having snacks, encourage your child to rinse the mouth with water, which helps wash away any remaining food.
• Get more fluoride – Regular fluoride use strengthens the enamel, making it difficult for acid to penetrate. If there is no fluoride in the water supply or your family uses filtered water, ask your dentist for fluoride supplements. Many toothpaste kinds include fluoride, but a child’s teeth will not be protected entirely by toothpaste alone. However, be careful, as too much fluoride can cause tooth discoloration. Before supplementing, consult with your dentist. Fluoride is available as drops or tablets, but most kids do not require extra fluoride.
• Limit or prevent some food items – Sugary foods, beverages, candies can weaken enamel and trigger cavities. If your children consume these foods, make them clean their mouth, or brush their teeth to wash away the sugar after eating. When your child’s permanent teeth grow, by applying a thin wash of resin (called a sealant) to the back teeth, where much of the chewing is done, the dentist can help prevent decay. This protective coating prevents bacteria from settling in the molars’ hard-to-reach crevices. But make sure kids know that sealants are not a substitute for daily flossing and a good brushing. Daily check-ups and good dental hygiene can help to eliminate the need for severe dental work.If you are looking for professional help with this, feel free to login to AstoCare.com and book an appointment with the nearest doctor online.
