History Of The Chicago Bears
As a charter-member of the National Football League, the Chicago Bears have one of the most dynamic histories in professional sports. In their 90 seasons, they have amassed the most regular season wins (693) and combined regular season and postseason wins (709). They also lead the NFL in Hall of Famers (30) and retired uniform numbers (13).
The Bears can trace their origins to 1919 when the A.E. Staley food starch company of Decatur, Illinois, established a company team named the Decatur Staleys. George Halas and Edward Dutch Sternaman were hired in 1920 to run the league and Halas subsequently moved the team to the NFL.
In 1921, they moved to Chicago. They continued to be known as the Staleys until Halas purchased them from A.E. Staley for $100. From the time of Halas's purchase until today, they have been known as the Bears.
The Chicago Bears were dominant in their early years. They won the league championship in 1921 and picked up two more in the 1930s (1932 and 1933). In the league's first six years, the Bears did not lose more once to each team in the NFL aside from the Canton Bulldogs and the ...
... Chicago Cardinals. They posted 34 shutouts in that span.
The Bears were part of a notable dynasty in the 1940s. From 1940 to 1947, Chicago played in five NFL Championship Games and won four of them. They were led by quarterback Sid Luckman, who to this day holds many club passing records.
They dynasty of the 40s began in style. The Bears were scheduled to play the favored Washington Redskins at Washington's home field in the 1940 NFL Championship Game. Chicago routed Washington, 73-0, in the most lopsided NFL title game in history. Fullback Bill Osmanski ran for 109 yards on ten carries with 1 touchdown (the touchdown came on a 68 yard run on the second play from scrimmage).
The key to Chicago's success in the 1940 title game was their use of a new offensive formation. George Halas, as Chicago's coach, instituted what he called the T-formation that involved two running backs instead of one. The T-formation would go on to be widely used across the league.
It was also during the 40s that the Bears started to acquire characteristics for which they are still known today. After the University of Chicago discarded their nickname Monsters of the Midway, the Bears adopted it. They also started wearing helmets with the C that is still used today.
The Bears went on a drought for the next several years. They wound up winning their 8th NFL Championship in 1963 which would be their last until 1985.
Bears fans are all very fond of the 1985 season. It was then that the Bears put together arguably the greatest season in NFL history. The '85 Bears defense is revered in NFL circle's as the best ever, and they only lost one game all year. They were immortalized in a taunting music video called the Super Bowl Shuffle which they filmed shortly before defeating the New England Patriots for their first Super Bowl.
Chicago has had competitive years since their historic 1985 season, but haven't been able to win another Super Bowl. They played in Super Bowl XLI but lost to the Indianapolis Colts.
They appear to have a great team on paper right now and are expected to contend for the NFC North next season. Quarterback Jay Cutler will be joined by recently acquired defensive end Julius Peppers, running back Chester Taylor, and tight end Brandon Manumaleuna.
The Bears have won nine league championships in their history (eight NFL Championships, one Super Bowl), second only to the hated Green Bay Packers.
