Traveling to Hoi An, you should not miss the Hoi An Lantern Festival. It is known as one of the most distinctive festivals in not only Hoi An but also throughout the whole of Vietnam country.

Lantern Festival has gained a reputation in recent years as it allows internal and international travelers to contemplate such extraordinary scenery that cannot be shown up in any other places on Earth.

Lanterns are still lit every night in Hoi An Vietnam no matter if it is the Lantern Festival or not. Candles are put and burned at the bottom of the colorful paper/cloth lanterns, creating such a twinkling atmosphere in the glittering moonshine.

1. When does the Hoi An Lantern Festival take place?

“Full moon date of the old town” program was first held in 1990 by the authority of Hoi An Vietnam with the context of the early years of the twentieth century. In the next 15 years, on every 14th night of the lunar moon, every month when the moon is at its fullest and brightest, Hoi An Ancient Town has become once again more and more flickering in the magical lights from such colorful lanterns.

LANTERN FESTIVAL DATES in 2020:
· January 19th, February 18th, March 19th, April 18th, May 18th.
· June 16th, July 16th, August 14th, September 12nd, October 12nd.
· November 10th, December 9th.

Every year, the most imposing Hoi An Lantern Festival is held on Tet holiday from the last days at the end of the lunar December to the end of the first lunar month. Hoi An Lantern Full Moon Festival has attracted visitors from not only Vietnam but also all over the world. It has been known as a unique feature in Hoi An tourism culture.

2. Where does the Hoi An Lantern Festival Vietnam Happen?

Hoi An Lantern Festival is held in the area of Hoi An Ancient Town where there are countless colorful lanterns. Many activities are organized at An Hoi Bridge and along the riverbank of the Hoai River.
If your accommodation is in the center of Hoi An, it will just be a short walk from your hotel. Otherwise, for those who choose to stay near the beach, it will take you about 10-15 minutes to get to Hoi An city center by taxi.

3. What time does the Lantern Festival begin and finish?

Hoi An Lantern Festival Vietnam normally starts from 6 pm to quite late in the evening, at about 9-10 pm. Many visitors choose to assemble in Hoi An Vietnam when the sunset begins after they have dinner, relax with a cup of Vietnamese coffee and wait for the Lantern Festival to begin.

After 8 pm, all the buildings in Hoi An Old Town start to turn off their electricity to allow lights from such lanterns to illuminate the environment in order to create a remarkable radiance.

4. What to do at Hoi An Lantern Festival Vietnam?

You can enjoy the best outdoor performances without paying anything. During the Lantern Festival, you will definitely be attracted by the charming traditional shows such as “Lion Dance” and dances along the riverbank by talented dancers and artists

In addition, lantern decoration contests and art fireworks are also available. However, art fireworks only often appear on the Lunar New Year. Hoi An Lantern Full Moon Festival gives visitors a chance to participate in traditional Vietnamese games at Hoi An, for example, “Bai Choi”, Chinese chess, tug of war, and so on.

One of the most remarkable activities that have lasted a thousand years is dropping lotus lanterns on the Hoai River. Although such lanterns are not made of luxurious materials, they are carefully made by the hands of local artists from Hoi An Town. They are made with the meaning of luck and love.

Vietnamese people believe that lighting and dropping lanterns on the river will bring health and happiness. It will be an unforgettable memory for tourists to rent a small wooden boat, light a lotus lantern, drop it on the river and pray for nothing but the best.

If you are interested in Vietnamese local food, Hoi An Ancient Town will be a good choice for you. Here, you can taste all the famous dishes in Hoi An, for example, "Cao Lau" (a mixture of rice noodles, pork, and fresh vegetables), "Banh Bao" (steamed dumplings filled with pork, mushrooms, and other ingredients), "Banh My Phuong" (famous banh my in town), chicken rice and so on.
