We are living in uncertain times with no job guarantee. We never know when we might lose a job. It could be a recession or company downsizing or a pandemic. Anything can bring job loss. Your job is something in which you invest your passion, emotions, and hard work. For some people, their job gives purpose to life, and for some people, their job can even be a calling. Losing a job, when you least expect it, is one of the difficult situations in life.

Job loss is a kind of shock and it takes time to accept it. Questions like how to pay next month EMI’s or how to pay school fees of the child come into mind. It brings uncertainty about the future. Job loss is not only a financial issue, but it also affects self-esteem for the majority of the people. It brings down the confidence of a person and impacts mental health negatively.

So, how to cope up with job loss? Here are ten ways to handle it.

10 ways to cope up with job loss:
1. Don’t take it personally: Yes, job loss is a personal loss, but don’t take it personally. Don’t blame yourself and think that your company fired you because you are inefficient ...
... or a failure. There could be many reasons why jobs become obsolete. It could be that company is cutting down the costs, or it could be a global recession, or a pandemic could have hit the world. We never know the actual reason for losing a job. So, don’t be harsh on yourself.

2. Don’t be ashamed: Losing a job is not something to feel shameful or be embarrassed about. There are many college toppers and super performers who are fired. Job loss is part of life, and it happens to many people. Even the great Steve Jobs, who created Apple, was fired from his own company. So, don’t be ashamed if job loss happens to you. You are not alone in this journey. Millions of people lose jobs every year.

3. Rebuild your self-esteem: It is common to feel worthless and as a failure when job loss happens. Self-confidence goes down. But don’t be stuck in this feeling for a long time. Don’t let your self-esteem depend on how your company treats you. Remember that your job is only a small part of your life and you are bigger than your job. There are many job alternatives in life. So, move on and rebuild your self-esteem.

4. Assess yourself objectively: Think about your strengths and weaknesses. Assess yourself as if you are assessing another person. Be honest with yourself. This will help you understand your areas of improvement and strengths. Once you identify your areas of improvement, start working on them, and try to improve in these areas.

So, create a daily routine like – at what time you wake up, when you sleep, when you learn new skills, etc. Having a daily routine helps you make productive usage of your time, and it keeps you engaged well in a day.

7. Actively search for a new job: Update your resume and start searching for the next job on job portals. Be active in job search. Forward your resume to your friends and colleagues. Try your best in a job search.

8. Take good care of yourself: Its important to take care of physical, emotional, and mental health during the job loss phase because it is easy to become depressed and indulge in emotional eating or to become a couch potato. It’s easy to gain weight or lose health in this phase. So, spend an hour every day in taking care of yourself. Do yoga or meditation to minimize your stress. Do physical activities like walking, exercising, jogging, etc.

9. Create a financial plan: Since job loss brings financial crunch, have a plan in place on how to handle existing EMI’s and financial commitments. Can you defer your loan payment? Can you utilize your PF funds? Can you cut down your expenses? Take the help of your family members. Discuss with them about the situation and come up with a plan to handle it. Create a financial plan that helps you sail through this tough time.

10. This, too, shall pass: Know that the current phase of job loss is temporary, and it does not last forever. Believe in yourself and your ability to find the next job. Life will have up’s and down’s. You would have faced many problems in life and would have come out of them with flying colors. It’s the same with this problem too. This, too, shall pass. Very soon, you will find out a way. All you need is patience and trust.
