Edtech Transforms Learning Outcomes In Sea
If you knew Southeast Asia as a place, you would know that the region considers the education of a child as a necessity and not a privilege. Due to the importance that the people of this region place on education, parents usually enroll their children to attend other educational classes after school. This is used to consolidate the academic knowledge of the children.
There are roughly 700 million people who live in Southeast Asia, and of this, approximately 25.7% are children who are within the school-going demographics.
The inability to get a proper education in Southeast Asia
Unlike the urban areas, the rural regions of Southeast Asia (SEA), lacks development, and there are not enough trained teachers. This means that children are not getting the needed education. The teachers are not adequately paid, while there are more students than teachers which further contributes to the low education quality. People who can afford private education prefer to take their kids to such schools. However, students who are unable to afford private tuition are forced to make do under the existing school system. This ...
... leads to an increasing gap in unequal education among children.
But, EdTech is such an innovative tool that seems to solve most of the problems that students face. The tool helps to solve the problem of the absence of studying facilities and the problem with distance. Furthermore, EdTech also comes at a minimized cost. This means that the students of all ages even working adults can get access to a quality education with just an internet connection.
EdTech in Southeast Asia serves as a solution to educational problems
Statistically, the SEA has lots of internet subscribers. Only in 2019 alone, approximately 97 million mobile phones were sold in the area. This fact alone makes the region the perfect location to implement the EdTech program.
Additionally, in the past five years, the SEA has managed to put together roughly $480 million as funds to invest in the EdTech start-up program.
Currently, we have lots of EdTech start-ups located within the SEA region like the Classruum (Malaysia), Ruangguru (Indonesia), Taamkru (Thailand), and Topica (Vietnam). These schools are looking to close up the gap in the region’s education and provide quality education for those who needed it. Mainly, Topica, an EdTech start-up based in Hanoi looks to increase the number of talents through empowering the youths with the skills required to function effectively in a professional environment in this current digital period. Topica currently delivers over 3,000 online courses. These courses cover topics from computer programming and marketing with social media. They have been able to train over 6,000 students so far. Asean’s skills based education just might be the needed push needed by the students to consolidate their school-based education.
EdTech in Southeast Asia looks set to bring quality & affordable education to many especially those underprivileged. Particularly in these times of the Covid-19 pandemic where many schools are under lockdown. EdTech can be used as a means to provide education to numerous students young and old who may not have smooth access to education due to state-imposed lockdowns.
